theres a feeling of guilt trickling down her spine like the blood from her head. she shouldve just supported nancys choices rather than be against them. why ? well , shes in the hospital after somehow surviving the upside down.
barb may have been different and on the brink of death , but she still had that same connection with nancy she did before. barb knows that theres a definite chance that nancy may not like her the way barb does - but it doesnt matter. she now knows that nancy is safe , it feels like . . . barb doesnt care if she dies. its odd.
theres a little voice saying that shes going to be okay - when shes not. her survival could only last so long , and she hated that. barb is torn on how to feel : hatred that if she dies - nancy will be in pain or that barb will be happy when shes gone. either way , nancy will be alive and safe and okay. thats all that barb continues to tell herself : whether she lives or dies - shes safe.
she feels like its time. she held on with sweaty palms - and now her grasp is slipping away. but back in reality , she reaches for nancys hand for the last time. her heart beats more as she gathers courage to say what shes wanted to say for years.
‘ nancy , theres something i wanna tell you. i - i love you. not as a friend , and i wish i couldve j-just told you before but i . . . im sorry. g-goodbye . . . ‘
her last breath slivers away from her grasp. she didnt get to tell her everything - but she tried. nancy is probably disgusted. what was she thinking ? she couldnt believe her last feeling would be regret. but it was.
