I would love to know if you have any favorite organizations or charities that focus on bisexuality awareness? <3
Hiiiii! I dooooo although they are primarily UK based organisations that I’ve had direct dealings with in one way or another. BiUK, the Bi Community News and The Bisexual Index do a terrific job keeping people appraised of events happening locally to them, academics working in the field of bisexuality, raising awareness of bisexuality through biactivism and so on. They were all involved with the Open University’s 2012 report on bisexuality, which comprehensively highlights some of the issues faced by bisexual people in the UK. I also support bi groups whose primary goal is to help people in the local area meet other bi people for friendship and support and there are a number in the North of England, like Biphoria in Manchester which has now been running for almost 25 years. Much of the time given to organising these events is voluntary and the people involved are often working unpaid, to support bi people in local communities so I tend to focus on working out ways I can get involved with bi activism at that kind of level first and foremost and it is those organisations I try to support with volunteer time if I can.
Having said that, UK based charity Stonewall which has something of a troubled history with taking into account the ‘B’ in LGB and only added the T to their constitution some time after becoming established, are an organisation I support on a national level. They have since really ramped up their efforts and are more consciously focused on broader diversity beyond L and G. Ultimately they remain a loud voice in the UK - one of the foremost if not the foremost, with a lot of celebrity support, initiatives around raising awareness in schools and so on -and they have the resources and paid staff to help amplify bi voices, such as publishing materials and research to help secondary schools tackle biphobia and understand bisexuality. There are of course multiple LGBT charities like Stonewall that pay specific attention to bisexuality as part of their work, but setting all of those out, together with their various perspectives (e.g. LGBT Youth, Homelessness, Mental Health, Hate Crime and so on) would make for a very long list.
In terms of stuff that’s specific to the U.S. there are things like the American Institute of Bisexuality, Bisexual.org, Bisexual Resource Centre, Bi.Net and a bunch of others. I also like falling down the odd YouTube vlogger rabbit hole and Eliel Cruz and Taylor Behnke have some good vids on bisexuality but there are a lot more my brain is forgetting right now. This is a rubbish list :D - sorry, I got distracted by my editing!!!! I’ll make a proper bi resource list one day with blogs and twitters and journals and things, with a more international focus and some of my favourite pieces on bisexuality. Thank you for the ask, lovely!!!
