Felicity / Ep. 115: “Love and Marriage” / Moments
On the surface, it may look for a moment like everything in Felicity/Noel World is, um, serene? We'll go with serene. In the space of this episode, they have overcome both Noel's issues with his brother AND his issues with Felicity's decision to get "green card married" to Javier. (Noel has many issues. This is why I can only deal with him when he's in RA mode.) And now they stand, side-by-side, watching Javier and Samuel ride off together.
But notice how the camera lingers on them during and after Sally’s narration. Sally’s not talking about missing friends here -- she’s pointing out that sometimes a person is driven to help two people in love because that person wants to HAVE that kind of love...to be in love. The implication, of course, is that the person acting this out doesn’t have that love at present. It’s something he or she is still searching for.
Who threw herself into helping Javier and Samuel this episode? Felicity. So if Sally’s narration is meant to apply to her (as it surely must), then that’s a rather damning indictment of her relationship with Noel, because it implies that Felicity doesn’t feel for him what she wants to.
For as much as fans fought (still fight?) over which man Felicity should have ended up with, the writing is fairly consistent in making the case that Felicity and Noel work as friends but not as lovers. Something I believe Felicity knows and chooses to ignore at key points in the series, like whenever she’s running from her feelings for Ben and needs Noel as a safety blanket or a security perimeter or something.
Oh, speaking of Ben, that's another cool thing about the framing of this shot, and something you've probably already noticed: Felicity has Noel on one side and Ben on the other. Ben's out of focus because he hasn't officially re-entered the triangle yet, but it won't be long now. (Ben's current girlfriend, Julie, is conveniently blocked by Felicity -- another nice detail and bit of foreshadowing.)
Also, it's not clear in the gif because I had to cull some frames to keep under the size limit, but if you watch the scene closely you can see that while Felicity and Noel’s eyes remain fixed in place, Ben's eyes keep flicking back over to Felicity.
Yeah. Not so very long now.
I'm gonna marry a gay guy, too. felicity ep. 115 "love and marriage" = colors
