Sexism is always made worse by racism — and vice versa.
Gloria Steinem
This weekend I went on a trip with some fellow students, mainly males. I was reading a publication of bitch magazine and summarized equally two articles to the group, both with the same seriousness. The first one was the history of dildos and the second was representation of post-partum depression in film and television. I find it interesting and worth contemplation that the former was given much more attention throughout the next few days, becoming a joke with the men in the group even though I explained it to the group in the most non-erotic and factual way possible and gave both subjects equal time. Furthermore, the fact that I was reading a magazine named bitch also became a joke. Also, not everyone in the group initially heard the summary, but were told by those who did simply of the topic. They then joined on the jokes. I’m still processing this myself, any thoughts? As I reflect upon this today I feel some sort of uneasiness but I cannot put my finger on way I feel this way.
