Five immediately pulls his book up a little higher in front of his face, and no, it’s not to hide, it’s not so Vanya won’t see the little twitch tugging insistently at the corner of his mouth, it’s not so he won’t smile, it’s not so he won’t laugh, it’s just to get the number of the page he’s stopped on, so he can pick back up where he left off later.
Yes, he is going to pick back up where he left off. He’s going to read it all the way to the end. Even with that appallingly mishandled and atrociously under-researched section on particle theory back in chapter seven.
“I’m not giving you any look,” Five says, when he’s (got himself under control again) got the page number tucked away in the back of his mind, and he shuts the book with a snap. “I’m--” his mouth twitches up again, and he has to bite down, hard, on his bottom lip, “--observing your methods.”
He pushes himself up on his feet, his book tossed in the chair, and he heads over to Vanya on the other end of the room, with the shelf high over her head. It’s high over his head, too, come to that, and he hates that more than words can even describe, but he’s a little better off here than Vanya, because at least he didn’t waste the last ten minutes looking like a complete fool, stretching and straining and jumping up and down to reach a thing she is very clearly not ever going to reach. Unless she has another growth spurt, along with her surprise superpowers, up her sleeve.
Five jumps, in a flash of bright blue, up to grab the jar on the edge of the shelf, and sets it down, with a heavy clunk, on the counter in front of his sister. “Maybe,” he raises his eyebrows, and he holds a straight face this time, “you should consider a footstool.”
