Testing pickups

Completed a shootout of a couple of different types of pickups. Here’s what happened:

Pickup set 1: wilkinson vintage, alnico magnet, single coils mounted to a squire affinity strat.

Pickup set 2: Fender MIM (Made in Mexico) single coils, ceramic bar magnet (2 of them), mounted to a Fender MIM strat.

Amp: vox valvetronix vt100 (using senheiser headphones)

Result: Bit stunned really. I thought a pickup was a pickup regardless who made it. It was all down to the magnets and quality of components. I know that’s technically correct, but there is a bit more to it than that. You get what you pay for.

Alnico is better than ceramic. You hear that all the time. It’s all guitar snobbery in my opinion.

Plugged in the MIM Fender. It’s got that nice warm strat sound on the neck, flick it to position two and you get that wonderful cheesy strat tones. Great sounding. What you would expect.

I then plugged in the squire with wilkinsons. I must just mention I know it’s not the best comparison a I’m comparing a squire to a fender, but that’s all I can do. So, squire plugged in and…….. I was expecting it to be like night and day, for we all know that alnico is better than ceramic!!! And how wrong I was in this case. The wilkinsons were weak, flat, muffled sounding. Dull and uninspiring would be the best way to describe it. That was in the neck position. Flicked it to position two and things didn’t improve. It had escence of the strat noise but just poor sounding and boring.

Switched back and forward quite a few times and amazed that the Fender ceramics sound great!!!

So there you go. Before you dismiss the stock fender ceramics in a MIM give them a chance, they rock!!!!
