Have been going around in circles with the (incredible) FenxShiral resources on Ao3 for days to try to get some Elvhen locked down for a Solavellan fic… I think the more progress I make the longer it’s going to take me. Such is shipping! Energy self-generating fr fr 💃
Hello, I stumbled upon somethig called Project Tevene on AO3 - provided was the link to now-unactive tumblr blog that redirected me to your blog. I was wondering - if it was your project, do you still work on it or maybe has it been abandoned?
Ahh, thanks for your interest but it’s been mostly abandoned, I’m afraid, at least by me. I’ve moved on to other projects. But you can look through my Tevene tag if you’re interested in what little I did work on.
If you’re interested in fan-made projects for the languages of Thedas, definitely check out @fenxshiral’s work on Elvhen and some of the other in-world languages. I think he might have plans to tackle Tevene eventually, but he could give you more info. :)
O.M.G.!!! I think my head is about to explode, lol! I've been doing some research on the DragonAge Elven language for my Fanfic Longing and it seems the more I research the more complicated it gets, /sighs heavily in frustration ! I guess it's that school girl part of me that says if your going to write it and use it then you better use it properly! Lol. Only problem is DragonAge Elven isn't a complete language, it's not even really a conlang, but an English cipher. Which makes it difficult to use when trying to make more than some simple phrases. There are some talented people out there who are expanding on the canon material to try and make it into a usable language such as FenxShrial. And for that I am eternally grateful, for they have helped immeasurably.
The phrase I was trying to translate into Elven was:
"I will love you forever, you are my life, my love, my heart's desire"
The only part I am having trouble with is the "I will love you forever, you are" part, because thanks to FenxShrial's wonderful work, I have been able to translate the rest of it from the "my life" part onwards, as well as some other phrases and sentences, as well as correcting my sentence structure a bit. So if any of you awesome people wanna take a crack at it I would be most grateful :D !
I want to begin my first attempt at creating my first conlang as a project for this school year and to keep my myself in higher spirits this semester. I’m thinking about combining my obsession with Dragon age with my love of linguistics and doing one of the languages from Dragon Age; taking their cipher and turning it into a real language. I was strongly considering working on Tevene.
I’ve seen posts tagged with Thedas Language Project and know one person was working on a Project Elvhen (I believe they’re on hiatus though? Which, hey, if you’re willing to take help from a beginner @fenxshiral I’d love to work with you!). I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes by copying or intruding on their work so has anyone started working on Tevene yet? Can I volunteer if no one else has?
I didn’t want to involve myself in the ongoing discussion/criticism of @fenxshiral and Project Elvhen, because my interest and involvement in the Thedas Language Project lies in the linguistic study of Thedosian languages, and I avoid debates of a personal nature when possible.
However, since I’ve seen it discussed among my friends and followers (and since I’m actively involved with @fenxshiral’s language project), I felt I needed to clarify where I stand, for the sake of full disclosure.
If this post doesn’t sufficiently clarify my position, please read this post and contact me privately. I’d be happy to discuss my thoughts further in private.
If you haven’t read the post accusing @fenxshiral of homophobia, acephobia, abusive behavior, and sexual deviancy, among other crimes, the post is HERE.
@fenxshiral responded today and shared the entire chat log of the group convo mentioned by some of the people calling him out.
Before anyone leaps to the obvious argument, no, there’s no guarantee the chat log hasn’t been altered prior to being posted, that’s true, but then again this entire debate is one person’s word against another’s.
Based on what I’ve seen and read of Project Elvhen, I don’t believe the accusations made against @fenxshiral about his interpretation of the Elvhen language are accurate.
As for the personal accusations against @fenxshiral’s character, with regard to his nsfw sideblog, I haven’t read the sideblog and don’t know him well enough to say for myself whether the accusations are true or false, but you can read the post he wrote addressing the accusations.
I use Project Elvhen for my fanfiction, and I will more than likely continue to use Project Elvhen. I’m also a regular contributor to @fenxshiral’s Thedas Language Project, namely Project Tevene.
I hope this doesn’t make any of my followers or friends uncomfortable, but if it does, I’m sorry.
There are aspects of @fenxshiral’s theories about elven culture and Elvhen language that I don’t agree with. For example, I don’t know if I agree that Dalish elves would consider an aromantic or asexual person to be “broken” or “damaged” or “incapable of emotion,” as some of his analysis of Dalish vocabulary would suggest. As I’ve seen at least one person point out, Dirthamen and Falon’Din (the twin gods of Dalish legend) are said to have had a platonic/aromantic/asexual relationship. (It’s not clear from context which word would best describe their relationship, except that it was “not romantic.”)
However, although I disagree, I can see where @fenxshiral may have gotten the idea that the Dalish would disapprove of asexuality/aromanticism, and I don’t believe that positing such a theory inherently makes him an abusive or homophobic/acephobic individual.
It’s a theory. There are many theories. I agree with some and I disagree with some. That’s the nature of fandom. Since I don’t think the Dalish would condemn aromantic/asexual individuals, I don’t use the words he invented that refer to those individuals. I borrow some parts of @fenxshiral’s language, and make up other parts where I disagree.
At least one of the accusations about Project Elvhen (the one claiming that @fenxshiral is wrong about the Dalish rejecting same-sex marriage) has actually been refuted by the devs themselves as canon. The Dalish in fact do frown on same-sex relationships because such relationships don’t produce children. You can read lead writer Patrick Weekes’ confirming tweet HERE.
We can discuss, if you like, whether we want to agree or disagree with the devs on this particular point of Dalish culture, but as far as I’m concerned at least, dev word is law with regard to canon. The Dalish are not a universally accepting and tolerant people. We’ve been given enough instances of Dalish elves abandoning or alienating their own to be able to recognize that.
Acknowledging and incorporating canonical Dalish intolerance into Project Elvhen does not inherently make @fenxshiral an intolerant person.
I hope my friends who feel negatively about @fenxshiral and his project will take the time to decide for yourselves what’s true and false, and that you won’t feel differently about me after reading this post.
If you still feel uncomfortable with using Project Elvhen, of course that’s fine. After all, Project Elvhen isn’t canon; it’s one person’s interpretation, and like any fandom theory it’s susceptible to flaws and bias and misinterpretation.
Finally, if I’ve made any of my followers uncomfortable by putting forth an opinion on this issue, again, I’m sorry. I’d be glad to discuss with you further in private why I feel the way I do on this subject, if you’re willing and interested.
