They made a show called âThe T wordâ which essentially was the same as âThe L wordâ but all the lesbians were translators. When my teacher suggested we watch it in our translation class, I was like sir, this is a terrible idea.
so i just pictured the most random scenario ever and kinda projected a lot too ngl but HEAR ME OUT, sorry for the long paragraph

PART 2
Mama knows best
âHey Dr Abbotâ you looked up at him to find him approaching you.Â
âHowâs your night going?â
âNot uninteresting but also fine⌠howâs yours?â
âItâs alright, I need your help with somethingâŚâ he stood there fidgeting with his hands âI have a patient who doesnât speak English andâŚâ he cleared his throat.Â
âYou need my helpâ you added, feeling a smile tugging at the corner of your lips.
He seemed nervous. âI donât want you to think just because English⌠is not your first language that you can help with anyone who doesnât speak English andââ
âDr Abbot, itâs fine really. I can try and help â do you know what language they speak?â
He shook his head. âShe keeps going in and out of consciousness â stats are fine but sheâs a Jane Doeâ
âShitâ you muttered âOkay I can help. Which room is she in?â
He lead the way to room 11. âthank you, for this, I really appreciate itâ
âOf course anytime â is it that obvious English isnât my first language?â You teased as you approached the room.
âNo, not at all but sometimes you say like a cute phrase and the accent pops ouââ
Your cry interrupted his sentence. âMama?â Jane Doe was your mom. âwhâ what happened?â You looked at him then back at her.Â
You shook her but she was unconscious again. In your native language you said through tears âmama wake up, câmon wake upâ
You looked at her stats they were fine â it had to be her sugar levels. You felt yourself panicking and your heart rate was racing with every second. âmama talk to me what happenedâ
You turned around to abbot and in your native language you said through tears âit must be her diabetes I need a sugar monitor, pleaseâ
âSweetheart, youâre not speaking in English. What is it? Tell meâ He approached, placing a hand gently on your shoulder. You were struggling to breathe now, pain shooting through your chest. âJust breathe, okay? One deep breath for me. Thatâs it â just another one.â
âSheâs diabeticâ you spat out.
âHun, try again in English pleaseâ he said softly.
You shook your head. âSheâs diabetic, type 1, have you checked her sugars?â
âOn itâ the nurse said, already moving toward the monitor.
You started pacing around the room â why didn't she call you? Why has she not said anything? What exactly happened? Where was she found?
âLowâ she said âIâll start a glucose dripâ
âThank youâ Abbot said. âSheâs gonna be fine okay? I just need you to be fine now. You look like youâre about to pass outâ
You nodded, you indeed felt like you were about to black out âitâs my mom Jack itâs my momâ you cried and he didnât hesitate to hug you. The words slipped out before you could stop them â Jack. You immediately felt embarrassed.
He murmured âItâs gonna be fine okay?â
âI hope soâ you tutted at yourself then said in English and muttered âsorryâ.
âItâs nice hearing you speak a different languageâ he pulled back and gave you a small smile.
You met his with a similar one âsorry I canât switch between the two quicklyâÂ
âSo this is your mom, huh?â He moved you over gently to the chair next to her bed. You nodded
âSheâs prettyâ
âDr Abbot, are you hitting on my mom?â
He let put a chuckle âno⌠but I can see where you get your looks fromâ
You felt your cheeks flush. You whispered âthank youâ
Your mom was now waking up slowly, mumbling gibberish.
âIâm here, mama, Iâm right here. Youâre okayâ you held her hand and cried. âHow are you feeling?â
âMy sugars dropped at the supermarketâ she said quietly âI donât remember anything else, everything happened quicklyâ
âItâs okay, youâre with me now.â You forced a smile âare the sugars coming back up?" You asked the nurse and she nodded.
âSugars are back to normal and stats are looking better â sheâs stable sweetheartâ Abbot said quietly.Â
âSugars are fine okay? Get some rest. Iâll be backâ you gave her a kiss on the forehead and rushed out the room, Abbot following.
âIs she alright? What did she say?â He asked as he tried to match your quick steps.Â
âUh⌠sugars dropped, sheâs fineâ you quickly said walking out of the ER doors.
âWhere are you going?â He asked, matching your pace.Â
âSorry Dr Abbot I think I need a minuteâ and you ran down the alleyway into the darkness, letting out small sobs not realising he was behind you still.
You put one hand on your chest trying to calm the anxiety down. The shock of seeing her in a hospital bed and how scared she must have been not being able to communicate with anyone. You heard his footsteps behind you, approaching you slowly. You wiped your tears as best as you could before turning around to face him.Â
âIâm okay, I just need a minuteâ you whispered.
âTake as long as you needâ he said softly âanything I can do do to help?â
You shook your head and gave him a tired smile.
âMust be exhaustingâŚâ he said quietly âtaking care of people here, then going home to another full time jobâŚâ
You nodded â his words felt heavy as they lingered in your mind. It was indeed another full time job.Â
Children of immigrants never stopped working. You were her full time translator, advisor, personal assistant, carer⌠all of it. You wouldnât change it for the world, no. But you were indeed tired.Â
âHow old where you when you came here?â
âA teenagerâ you sniffled. âYoung enough to miss out on a fun childhood but old enough to learn the language quickly and become the head of the familyâ
âAnd since then you havenât had a day of restâŚâ
You let out another cry and he didnât hesitate to pull you into him for anothernhug. âI can helpâ he whispered âanything you need, Iâll be there okay?â
âIt was scary seeing her like that â sheâs the only person I ever have in this life andââ
âSweetheart English please?â
âFuckâ you muttered as you pulled back.Â
âI mean I donât speak your language but that couldnât have translated to just⌠fuckâ he joked, a smile spreading across his face.Â
âSorry I was ranting. My head is all foggyâ The emotional weight hit you all at once, and now you realised that Dr. Abbot had seen you at your most vulnerable. You suddenly felt exposed, embarrassed. You always kept things professional. âI should get backâ.
For a moment he didnât say anything, just stood almost admiring you. He nodded, not wanting to push further. âCan I come with you?â
âYes please, Iâm in no state of be a doctor right nowâ
âI canât wait to ask her more about youâ he said jokingly as you walked back towards the ER.
Your jaw dropped slightly âI still need to translate it you knowâ
âIâll find another wayâ he teased.
You walked back to the room and found your mom on the bed, showing pictures of you to the nurse on her phone.
âOh no, no!â You said rushing over âmama, put that away!â
âIâm showing your friend here some childhood picturesâ
âPut it away do NOT embarrass me!âÂ
âWhat? Whatâs she saying?â Abbot asked looking confused.Â
âNothing⌠sheâs fineâ you said quickly.Â
âMamaâ you snapped your fingers then motioned for her to put the phone away.
âOh my God is it baby pictures??â He asked and he rushed over to her side. He put two fingers in front of his eyes as if to say I want to see.
âAbsolutely not give it here!â You rushed over to his side now and snatched the phone out of his hand.Â
âHeâs handsomeâ she teased, pointing at him âwhatâs his name?â
âMama this is Dr Abbotâ you said to her first then turned around to him and said âmom this is Dr AbbotâÂ
âHello!â She said pointing at her self âmamaâ
âVery pleased to meet youâ he put his hand out to shake hers. âSheâs a brilliant doctor. You should be very proudâ
She looked at you then back at him.
âHe said I am a good doctorâ Â
âAh yes⌠very good doctorâ she smiled at him then back at you âwhere is the other doctor you always talk about?â
Your eyes widened then quickly shook your head.
His eyes glanced between you and her. âWhâ whatâs she saying?âÂ
âNothingâ you smiled, quickly trying to change the subject âCan she stay here until I finish my shift then Iâll take her home?Â
âSure thing. But first I gotta see them baby photosâ
âNopeâ you quickly said. âMama are you okay to stay here until my shift is done then I can take you home?â
âOf course yes, I can make everyone a hot drink while you workâ
âNo, mama it doesnât work that way. This is a hospitalâ
âBut theyâre your friends and you could all do with something comfortingâÂ
âAnd youâre a patient so stay here and donât moveâ you sighed.Â
âYouâre a terrible translatorâ Abbot added teasingly then noticed the worry on your face âWhy are you upset?â
âShe wants to make everyone a hot drink while we work. She doesnât understand the severity of the situation. Itâs like she doesnât care sheâs hereâ
âOkay can you translate this?â
You nodded.
âI canât let you use our facilities unfortunately but maybe one day you can meet your daughterâs friends outside of here. But for now you need to rest and sleep. As your doctor, Iâm ordering you toâ
You smiled then translated to your mom.Â
âThank you doctorâ she replied in English.Â
âPlease, call me Jackâ he added and your eyes widened.Â
âJack?â She looked between you and him âYou are⌠Jack?â
Oh God, your mind was screaming. Something was about to unfold.Â
âIâm Jack, Jack Abbotâ
âAhhhhâ she exclaimed. âI knowâÂ
âYou⌠know?â He looked between you and her.Â
You put your hand out as if to say I have no clue what sheâs saying.Â
âTell meâ he grabbed the stool and sat next to her with a smirk on his face.
âYou...Jackâ she said âvery nice doctorâÂ
âOh me? Who said that?â He shrugged, gesturing as if to say, who?
You wanted the ground to open up and swallow you whole. Now.Â
She pointed at you.
Great. Your mom was now spilling all your secrets.Â
âTell me, itâs okayâ he teased as he looked at you then back at her.Â
âYou⌠good doctor and she⌠â she gave him a thumbs up.Â
What the fuck?
âMama letâs maybe stop? He doesnât need to knowâ
âYou didnât tell me this is Jack!âÂ
Jack looked at you once he heard his name.Â
âHeâs so handsome and he has beautiful white curls. You forgot to mention the big armsâ
âMama!!!â You groaned âstop it!â âfuckâ âstop it!!â
âStop what?â He laughed, clearly enjoying the sight of you flustered.
âStay out of itâ you snapped. âMama I need to go see other patients. Get some restâ
âCan you invite the handsome doctor over? I can make him some food and maybe you can finally marryâ
âNo one is getting married!â You said it in English âFuck!!!â âStop okay! Drop it!âÂ
Your heart was about to explode.
âWhoâs getting married?â Abbot now asked, with a big grin on his face.
âDoctorâ your mom said looking at him.
You slapped a hand over your face, mortified.
âTell meâ he smirked âIâm all earsâ
âYouâŚâ she pointed at him âcomeâ she pointed at her self âfor foodâ
âYou are inviting me over for food?â He pointed at his mouth as if to say to eat?
âAh, yes⌠foodâÂ
âI would love toâ
âYes! yes⌠loveâ she pointed at you and laughed.
Abbot looked at you, a mix of shock but excitement in his eyes.Â
All your secrets had now spilled, and not even in a language he spoke.Â
