I fucking love all the little things the theater I went to last night did for the Iron Lung premier 🩸🧯🩻
Here’s a theory for you:
The wire was never broken
My personal theory is that Simon’s subconscious mind recognized that the voice Simon was hearing wasn’t coming from the speaker, even if his conscious mind didn’t. The voice was being projected directly into his mind which means there would be no mental signal coming from his ear drums to correspond with the voice. Simon’s subconscious knew the voice of the sm-8 pilot wasn’t actually coming from the speaker! So as a desperate means to get the conscious mind up to speed with what the subconscious already knew, Simon’s brain shows him a hallucination of the speaker’s wire being broken. It’s his brain’s desperate way of screaming “THIS ISN’T RIGHT!”
And thus, when The Light deposits Simon back within range of radio signal of Ava and her crew, Simon sees the wire is fixed again. Not because of The Light, or some kind of rewinding time loop shenanigans… but simply because the wire was never actually broken to begin with.
Me: Iron Lung is fucking amazing! The themes! The cinematography! The way it embraces the quiet moments and lets you really feel the dread with the main character! Magnificent! I wouldn’t change a single thing!
Also me: *rubbing my hands together like a lil gremlin* WHERE THE SIMON LIVES AUs AT?
Ao3… please come back! I want my stories… :’(
So I just did something I’ve never ever done before
I went and watched a movie for a second time in theaters. It’s rare enough for me to go see a movie in theaters at all! If I like the movie enough the first time I’ve always waited until the movie came out on dvd and then bought it to add to my collection (and also so I could re-watch with captions cause I’m hard of hearing)
Never! In my entire, within-spittin’-distance-of-thirty-years! Have I EVER felt the need to go see a movie for a second time in theaters!
So what movie did I watch? What movie captured my mind and soul so fiercely that I just couldn’t possibly wait until it was on home video to watch it again? What movie made me break my almost thirty year streak of only ever watching movies in theaters ONE time?
Iron Lung
I cannot overstate how fucking amazing I find this film! Any possible complaint I could have with the film requires getting needlessly nitpicky in my critique.
Point of fact, it was even BETTER the second time around! Cause the minor issues I was feeling with pacing the first time through? Completely disappeared upon rewatching! I legit think the reason so many people have complained about parts of the movie feeling slow, is because we’re all experiencing that weird little phenomenon that human brains like to do where our perception of time gets slowed down when we’re taking in new information for the first time. Like when going on a road trip to somewhere new and the drive just seems to take foooooreeeever! But then you go on that route again afterwards and the time just seems to fly by.
I think that’s what’s happened with Iron Lung. The movie is so different and new to most audiences that our brains are slowing everything down for us so we can take it all in better. But that can unfortunately make the movie’s pacing seem slower than it actually is.
Let me tell you though, when I watched it again today, there were multiple times where we got to a scene and I had the thought of “wait we’re at this point already?” On my second viewing, it felt like everything was moving at this perfect steady clip, slowly but surely increasing the pace until the final act where everything goes NUTS!
If you have the opportunity to go see Iron Lung, please do. If you’ve already seen it and have the opportunity to go see it again, PLEASE DO! Repeated viewing took a movie that I already was in love with and made me hopelessly infatuated with it.
I don’t really have the money to keep going back and watching it in theaters, but I cannot wait for Mark to get us a Blu-ray release. Cause you bet your ass I’m buying it in a heartbeat and watching it until I have it memorized backwards and forwards!
This is my first art fight! So here we go!
*poorly mimicking that one Markiplier birthday video where he’s spinning with a megaphone*
BIRTHDAY! BIRTHDAY! IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME AND ME ON-LY!
