i was stock taking at my mother’s shop today and i came across these paintings of highland cows with long fringes and it took me a while to realise who they reminded me of but yeah it turns out my mother is selling paintings of satan now

I just figured out a piece of Baccano trivia that I wish I had never figured out. So, in Czeslaw’s posturing to the Rail Tracer, he says he “lived with someone who put me through that level of pain, daily, for years”. I was always curious how long “years” was. 5? 20? 100? I think I know now, and I wish I didn’t.

Czes has clearly been living on his own for quite some time when he gets on the train. He’s been able to continue his research and already has a history of making deals with the military to sell explosive byproducts. That sounds like a minimum of a few decades to establish himself. But is it thirty years ago, or 130? We have a major clue in the scene where Fermet is devoured:

The important detail here is the clothing. Fermet is wearing suspenders, specifically Y-back suspenders. The earliest suspenders were not invented until 1820, and of the three models (H-back, X-back, and Y-back), the Y-back evolved last. 

If the costume choice in this scene is accurate at all, the earliest this scene could be is around 1850. According to the anime, Fermet spent a bare minimum of 135 years torturing Czeslaw.
