1. pjo/hoo by rick riordan
this series has been with me ever since i was 11 and to say they didn’t play a part in shaping me at all would be a lie because i’ve literally grown up with this series and all its wonder and it’s opened me up to a lot of things in the world. it’s also especially contributed to my strong interest in mythology.
2. the book thief by markus zusak
first book to make me cry ever. the way it was written and the beauty of the story really hit me hard. one of my favourite parts of history to learn about is world war ii and the fact that this book focuses on nazi germany really made me all the more interested in the story.
3. harry potter by j.k. rowling
honestly speaking i had zero interest in harry potter just a year ago. when i was younger i saw my siblings read this series and they always brought me along to watch the movies. needless to say, the movies didn’t help me at all in developing a strong enough interest to read the books despite how well produced it was. but i did try to read a bit and see if i would like it but i didn’t understand the books so i told myself when i was older i’d try to read it again. i read all 7 books within a few months last year and it was really beautiful. it was like opening up a whole new world in my life that i could escape to.
4. a series of unfortunate events by lemony snicket
this is another series that i’ve grown up with. i remember starting the first book when i was 9 and it was so intriguing because as a 9 year old, reading something like this really wow-ed me because i got so hooked into wanting to solve the mysteries along with the baudelaires. i think i might reread this series soon.
5. the hunger games by suzanne colins
amazing. i loved the whole idea of the book and how it was so in tune to politics of today. the whole story may seem like a bit of a stretch — putting 12 kids in a dome and making them kill each other — but imo it’s one of the most accuate representations of today’s politics. it’s also one of those books where the movies are almost equally as good as the books.
6. flowers for algernon by daniel keyes
i was made to read this by the school when i was 14. actually they gave us a few books to choose from and they were free so i chose this since it had been recommended. this book really moved me and it really reaches out to readers to feel the struggles and emotions faced by the character (i forgot his name LOL) by changing the writing style to show you how his mind is being changed by science. it starts with a man once of average intelligence becomes very very smart — and it shows in his writing style — before his mental state gradually deteriorates to that worse than before. he can’t even form proper sentences anymore and i think in that way, this book was extremely well written.
7. rainbow magic fairies by daisy meadows
the must have books when i was in primary school. i enjoyed reading them and finding the hidden letters in the pages to form the secret words. the stories were also really good for a 9 year old!
i can’t think of the last 3 HAHA
