Thinking about them meeting earlier while John was on leave and still getting together and working their relationship out is really interesting and this was done amazingly well.

Rec: A perfect conflux of factors leads to a sea change in John and Sherlock’s relationship. Cute and heartwarming without getting too fluffy or OOC, with a smidge of insecurity angst and the everpresent threat of bodily harm to keep things grounded. A refreshing OC to help move things along rounds out the cast. This also includes an often-requested scene at the end where John outs himself to his rugby pals.

This was just lovely! Anthea manages to wrangle Sherlock into coming home for Christmas dinner one year, or rather John does, leading to some lovely holiday domesticity. There’s the faint stirrings of both Johnlock and Mystrade in the wings, but this really is Anthea’s story, with a tender but balanced look at Sherlock’s character (read: he has actual flaws). John and Mycroft are really interestingly developed as well, and as for Anthea, I found this version of who she was really interesting and thoroughly believable.
Basically, if you like strongly-written, interesting characters with a sense of humor interacting together when the fate of the world isn’t on the line, check this out. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Hurray, questions!!! I love questions!!!! :D
2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
Even though it’s always such a strain on suspension of disbelief, I fucking love Pretend Couple fics. Pining is my general favorite, and Pretend Couple is such a good set-up for epic pining. Every permutation is just as good - going home and fooling mummy dearest, undercover in a gay bar… I love it all. So I’d love to write it, but it feels so self-indulgent that I find it hard to seriously contemplate.
3. Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?
Anything with leh behbehs. I like em in real life. I find them awkward as a part of The Epic Burning Passionate Romance.
7. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
This is from an odd little duck that nobody read called Nothing Standing in Your Way. It’s a Marcus/Esca fic for The Eagle fandom that I wrote for a Christmas fic exchange. They wanted cyberpunk and sky pirates. I have some kind of mental block on the whole concept of cyberpunk and just don’t really… get it? but I did my best. Mostly this is very muted Victorian scifi fic where nobody is getting what they want and everyone is quietly desperate.
"That ex-pirate has you wrapped around his little finger," Placidus remarks disdainfully at Uncle Aquila’s next dinner. It’s said in a quiet aside just to Marcus, so Marcus cannot claim offense. It’s the sort of thing a friend might tease him about, but Marcus feels hunted."It isn’t like that," Marcus says gruffly, unable to express himself any better. Placidus arches an eyebrow."No? He’s a sullen, willful little thing and what do you do but pat him on the head and thank him for his dutiful service! A bad investment, if you ask me. You bought a wolf for a dog’s place."
Placidus leans over to examine a tray of sweets, already losing interest in the conversation. Marcus, on the other hand, struggles for the words to defend both himself and Esca, though he should only be concerned with his own honor. A servant like Esca, of course, has no need of honor.
In theory."He’s fine," Marcus says, woefully inadequate. Placidus rolls his eyes.
I wouldn’t say this fic is my best work, or even my best work for The Eagle, but I had an idea of how this Marcus would sound, and it came out exactly the way I wanted. That’s rare, even in fics I like.
29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
Ooh, this is such an interesting question. Style and voice are so integral to the appeal of any given piece of writing that it’s difficult for me to imagine wanting to write the sequel/prequel to a fic by someone else. I want to read what they’d write!
But I suppose if I were to mess with the world of any other ficcer, I’d want to write a short prequel to 26 Pieces by Lanning. I have a lot of mixed feelings about Sherlock these days, but there’s still a lot of amazing fic that’s come out of it. It’s kind of funny though, because even if I flat-out hated Sherlock now it wouldn’t matter, because (and I say this lovingly and with great respect for the amazing writing) the Sherlock and John of 26 Pieces are so out of character for BBC Sherlock that they’re not even in the same zip code. That being said, I like her Sherlock and John better, which is a testament to how great a story it is on its own merits.
Lanning’s Sherlock and John are so unselfishly and passionately devoted to each other that my one big issue with the fic was always, why aren’t they together already? I suppose I’d write the backstory on that.
Just FYI
Sorry I've been so absent, especially if you read my fic and are waiting for an update. I recently moved up at work, and then up AGAIN, so my mathy day job has been hectic and taking up a lot of my brainspace (unfortunately). It's mostly a time issue - I tend to think up chapters and then write them, and my thinking time is an endangered species as of late.
Just want to clarify that I am absolutely still working on both What's Happening Brother and That Endless Song of My Dwarven Love Whose Lastest Installment I Self-Indulgently Gave the Most Ludicrously Pretentious Title To.
(Hoping to update Thorin/Bilbo tonight and Sam/Cap tomorrow, but don't hold me to that!)
