After much searching, I think I found the volunteer program that I want to take part in this summer :) It's in Lumbisi, Ecuador, and the small fee goes toward transportation to and from the airport in Quito, a home stay (yay!) and food. I love the idea of staying with a family, because it will help me practice my Spanish, a skill that will be extremely helpful to me in my social work career, and it gives me a better feel for the community. It's so freaking generous for anyone to let random strangers into their homes and lives. I would get to help out at any of the community centers, which is amazing, but I am the most interested in assisting at the elderly care center, helping the elders of the town get to and from the center, preparing food, helping them with activities, etc. I contacted the program today. It seems like an ethical way to volunteer abroad; it isn't just a "pop in and sweep one floor and take advantage of the community" kind of thing, from the looks of it. I'm excited!
