“A little story for this photo-series of our senior fewspot mare for you… Just after we had started our stud I heard another Appaloosa breeder talking about how long it took him to find out how valuable these ‘fewspot mares’ are for his breeding program to ‘produce’ leopards, but what ugly ‘things’ they are themselves that he is hiding away from the public… My heart cracks when I hear people talking like that about their animals. And so when I took these photos of our gorgeous broodmare Aspri I thought I hope to make a statement against such mindsets with it. Every horse is beautiful and deserves to be loved and valued in all aspects by the owner! 💕
For those of you who might not be familiar with the Appaloosa color genetics; Aspri is actually a black (smoky black) mare who is homozygous for the LP gene. The 2nd copy of the LP gene ‘overwrites’ the spots in phenotype but every single time she breeds a foal her foal will have some Appaloosa characteristics guaranteed. Fewspots and snowcaps unfortunately are affected by CSNE (night-blindness) and therefor not the preferred breeding goal of a responsible breeder; although they are highly treasured by Appaloosa breeders and enthusiasts of the breed and can be the outcome of many good breeding combinations to a small percentage. The healthiest way to breed a fewspot is to a solid partner as it guarantees the Appaloosa characteristics for the foal but excludes the ‘risk’ of breeding another fewspot or snowcap. It is also a theory that keeping solids in the breeding program will improve the contrast and clarity of the spots in the breed.
Enjoy the photos of our dear and precious Kondos Aspri! She is one very sensitive and beautiful soul.” - Joseph's Dream Appaloosa Stud

I think baby boy has recouped rather well. He's feeling frisky in this warm-up... #appaloosa #fewspot #horsesofinstagram #horseinjury #horsetendon #thisiswhyihustle #hesagoodboy https://www.instagram.com/p/BtcG2IhHXEv/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1cducn6jbjbrj
🐎 Domino's leg has no tremors now, the wound isn't crazy sensitive when I clean it, he's eating well, taking his meds like a champ #appaloosa #fewspot #horsesofinstagram #horseinjury #horsetendon #novacationforme
Day 6, and my Domino's wound is healing well. Closing in nicely from the inside out, don't want even the *thought* of #proudflesh #appaloosa #fewspot #horsesofinstagram #horseinjury
My baby boy hurt himself Friday night, his leg has a severe injury, severed a tendon, it's not pretty to look at, this is day 4, he's slowly mending. It's going to be several rough weeks for him- and me & the hubs. #horsesofinstagram #horseinjury #appaloosa #fewspot
