Prestige Class Spotlight 8: Feysworn
In a surprise twist, we’re covering yet another “Deific Obedience”-focused prestige class, though in this case, we are looking at something other than those tied to fiends or even any variety of outsider or god. Today we are looking at the Feysworn, a devotee of one of the Eldest, those ancient fey demigods that rule over vast swaths of The First World.
Unlike other deific obedience prestige classes, the Feysworn often feel less like priests or particularly blessed individuals, and more like vassals, perhaps because the Eldest, while capable of manipulating reality within their domain like any demigod, feel much more accessible than most such beings, even holding court which mortals are capable of attending, assuming they find a way to access the First World and navigate it to find their realm. A task considerably easier than finding a stable portal to an outer plane.
Regardless, feysworn come from all walks of life, though perhaps those capable of casting spells have the greatest advantage. Even still, non-magical classes can make use of the prestige class, assuming they don’t mind, or even enjoy servitude to an Eldest.
As mentioned previously, those feysworn that tap into magic as a resource continue to progress along that path as they gain mastery.
Touched by the fey as they are, feysworn become very close to being fey themselves. They gain immunity to effects that cannot target fey creatures, and upon death, they resurrect or reincarnate somewhere in the First World. This effectively makes them immortal, but getting back to wherever they were previously may prove difficult. Furthermore, if their Eldest patron becomes displeased with them, they can rescind this blessing, causing the feysworn to be absorbed back into the First World permanently, erased from existence.
Tied as they are to obedience to the Eldest, the powers of a Feysworn, including their additional spellcasting prowess, are maintained with daily supplication rituals to their patron.
Like all deific obedience classes, Feysworn gain access to the boons of their Eldest much faster than others.
Given their tendency to travel back and forth between the material and the First World, these individuals have a constant sense of the closest natural rift between the two, making such travel much easier.
Tapping into their blessings, these sylvan scions can temporarily make their flesh more fey-like, resisting all physical attack, save for those from cold iron.
As servants of the fey, they can also expect assistance from fey creatures at times, allowing them to summon various fey to aid them, including some not normally on summoned lists. Sometimes the Eldest might even give access to fey associated with the specific patron in question as well.
Tapping into the utterly alien mindset of the fey, Feysworn can temporarily increase their mental capacity in one aspect, as well as their mental resilience as well.
Eventually, sufficiently powerful individuals no longer require rifts to travel to the First World, becoming able to simply step there, even with allies in tow.
The most powerful feysworn can outright tear a rift to the First World, creating a viable path of transport that takes days to close. However, doing so unleashes waves of raw primal energy into the area. The effects are random, but always dangerous, though the feysworn themselves are immune to the effects, which is perhaps cold comfort to allies and foes alike nearby.
Interested in a character with ties to the fey realm, and wish for a powerful set of fey abilities? This prestige class can do just that. While spellcasting classes are a strong candidate for the prestige class, any could potentially find use in it. Martial classes, for example, benefit from having flanking fey allies and damage reduction. Regardless, your build will vary a lot by what other classes you’ve taken and what eldest you pay patronage to, so keep that in mind.
Diverse as they are, Feysworn know better than anyone the dangers of working with the volatile fey. As such, while many are playful and exuberant, the smarter ones know to remain polite at all times, lest they find the ever-changing wilds turning against them.
Though a creation of a modern era, the androids of Kelu occasionally find themselves a patron in the Fey Lord known as the Everwound Clock. Those that swear themselves to it begin to manifest abilities involving control of complex mechanisms, and even time manipulation.
Grodair are a well-known sight in the Fey Lands, their perpetual bubble of water letting the massive fish swim where they please. However, few know of the fey lord that is their patron, an entire hive-mind ocean which flows over the land like an ooze of colossal size. Those who devote themselves to Cerulean the Vast gain mighty control over the waves.
Ser Kermana has traveled every road on the continent, becoming something of a legend. The lady-knight is a devotee of The Wanderer, and while most do not trust fey spirits, Kermana has proven time and time again to be a protector, slaying bandits and predatory monsters that bring suffering to the locals. Though many have seen her, few remember exactly what she looks like.
