Somehow Brighter than Usual

Written for @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt 219, “Under the Night Sky”.

Scott’s sword dripped with blood and he wiped the sweat from his forehead. Binkie was laid across his shoulders, looking at him expectantly.

The stars twinkled above them, somehow brighter than usual.

The red halo of diamonds across his brow seemed just as bright, nearly blinding him. 

His shoulders dropped and his chest expanded as he closed his eyes, overtaken by a new sense of calmness.

Binkie curled up tighter against his neck and Scott raised his hand to pet her.

“We finally did it,” he murmured. “Just me and Binkie.”

Pearl may be gone, but this was the next best thing. Him and her pet.

With a new sense of resolve, he raised his sword.

“We finally did it!”

Pearl scratched her wolves’ ears. Somehow, they’d made it. Not all, and not Tilly, but there they were, in the near-empty world.

Scott stood across from her, his brow furrowed in mild bemusement, like he couldn’t believe where they were now both standing, the last two alive. He said as much.

Pearl stood, her axe loosely held by her right hand.

“I- honestly, didn’t have much faith in us.” Because you left me, she didn’t say. “But I had faith in myself and Tilly, and Tilly’s now passed away, so…”

Pearl thought that was all. Two victors. Unheard of, but possible. It had to be. Their lives depended on the other. Either both survived, or no one did.

Scott started speaking nonsense, about deserving more.

He clutched explosives to his chest and Pearl stumbled back with a yelp.

“Tilly death do us apart.”

The moon was full above her.

“W-wait, Scott, what are you doing!”

“Tilly death do us apart!”

“Scott!”

For just one moment, Pearl was the last person standing in this now dead world.

And then, she dropped.

The Endless Loop

Written for @flashfictionfridayofficial 219 prompt: Under the Night Sky.

“No! No! No! I can’t.” Her sweaty head whips back and forth across the pillow.

 

“You can. Just a bit more. You are almost there.” The voice is stern, no nonsense but kind. Pulling a breath in, the woman bares down again.

 

A floor below

 

“No! Don’t. Please don’t. Stay! I need you.” The young lady sobs. Her mom’s hand is cold on her bowed head.

 

“I can’t. It is time. I will be okay. So will you.” Her once strong voice is weak. The love is still present. Stronger then before.

 

Back in L&D

 

“Here comes your baby.” Jubilance feels the room. The new mother sobs with joy.

 

In ICU

 

She lets out a sigh. Her last breath. Her daughter’s grief fills the room.

 

Far above any of them, in the unseen.

 

The mother’s soul is heading up, the baby’s  heading down.

 

For an eternal second, they are face to face. Both glow. One in new earthly life. The other in new heavenly life. Nothing is said, not in words. But…

 

“Enjoy  your life, little one. It is but a breath, a sigh.”

 

“Enjoy your new life, blessed one. It is forever and ever.”

 

A life begins and ends(?) under the night sky. A wonderful loop, eternal of joy and pain, grief and relief.

 

Every night an end and beginning. Under the night sky.
