This was purgatory.

Or at least, the closest thing to purgatory that he could possibly imagine.

In every direction, for as far as the eye could see, there was… nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Just the Captain, a few broken planks he’d managed to lash together, and as much undrinkable water as a man could possibly want. ‘Captain’. What a hollow title that was now. What was a captain without a ship? What possible use was a captain when his vessel had been torn to shreds by some indescribable monster? 

A lot of folks thought that the biggest monsters were inland. In the forest, perhaps, where magic taints the wood of the trees and grows unnatural things. They were incorrect. The worst of the worst, the monsters left well away from bipedal interference, free of a risk of culling or a hunt mark - they lived in the sea. In the deeps. In the places where food was plentiful and they had no predators. Out here, they got big. Huge. 

Big enough to wrap a ship in tentacles and break it like a stubborn twig. 

Captain Leadfang gave a long, heavy sigh. Not the first. And probably not the last. He was hungry. His ship and crew were gone - the latter hopefully alive, if just as scattered as him. He was starving - but he knew he could live with that. 

He licked his dry, cracked lips and looked scornfully at the malms of undrinkable water stretching out in every direction. 

Gods, he needed a drink.
