Which dog breed (or any animal, it's up to you) would be a good fit for AGSZC to have as a pet?

Zack: Growing up, Zack always had a dog. I headcanon he grew up on a farm, so he always had a herding breed dog. So this means he wanted to continue that trend as an adult. He had so many breeds over the course of his childhood, so he had a hard time choosing! He eventually settled for Lucky, a Mudi he found at the shelter. Lucky was surrendered as his previous owners didn't realize he wouldn't stay tiny and cute, and had boundless energy. Zack loves Lucky and takes him on his multi-mile training runs in the morning.

Angeal: Angeal grew up poor, and so as much as he wanted a dog, he also knew that they could never dream of affording one. He didn't get a dog until his mid-twenties, when Genesis got him a puppy for his birthday (He tried so hard not to cry). The puppy in question was a perfect match for him, as Gen had been hiding questions in their every day conversation for months to find the perfect dog, knowing Angeal had always envied the Brittany Spaniel Genesis had as a child, not the breed, just the fact that Genesis was lucky enough to have a dog. The puppy, named Cricket, is a sweet little boy who enjoys sleeping on Angeal's floor while he cooks and cleans. Cricket is the best trained and fed of the dogs, being on a strict schedule and eating a diet hand-cooked by Angeal. Angeal can absolutely handle a massive dog, but as he spends long hours training himself and students, time spend in his office, and missions, he likes his low-maintenance Cricket- and because Cricket is behaved, Lazard doesn't mind dog-sitting while Angeal is away.

Genesis: Has always had animals. He's been spoiled since he was a child, with animals for status. He's had so many horses and Chocobos, and purebred dogs with champion bloodlines. Only the finest for a Rhapsodos child. That being said, Genesis took his childhood dog, Apple, with him to Midgar. Genesis was twelve when he got his Brittany Spaniel. Genesis went hunting with his father often, and while he never hunted anything too large, Apple was a champion at hunting quail. His favorite pooch was spoiled beyond belief, with only the highest quality, fresh food, even though she's perfectly fine with kibble. She's not picky, ironic for who she belongs to. Apple is well-cared for in Midgar, being dropped of every four weeks like clockwork in Wall Market for the premium package- oatmeal and milk bath, ear cleaning, full manicure (complete with all-natural paw oil for her toe beans), and a trim and groom to keep her flawless. Genesis also has a collection of dresses, collars, bandanas, ribbons, but most often she can be seen wearing her favorite collar; a leather collar in Dumbapple Purple with a matching charm and tag.

Sephiroth: An Afghan hound! Regal and independant, these sighthounds are fancy creatures who aren't too aloof, but enjoy the company of their human. Sephiroth didn't initially want a dog (he's more of a no-pets person, but would rather a cat), but he came across Afghan Hound puppies on a mission in Mideel and fell in love after seeing the mama. His dog is a refined little lady and her name is Luci, short for a name that kept popping up in his head- Lucrecia. He's not sure where it's from, but Luci is a beautiful dog and it fit her. Hojo now has an aneurysm whenever Sephiroth addresses his dog as Luci, as that was what he called his ex-wife.

Cloud: He's from backwater Nibelheim. He has the most obscure breeds no one has heard of. Cloud had Chocobos in Nibelheim, just a small flock, so his dog was always at his side and was good with the birds. He keeps a livestock guardian and protector. Her name is Athena and she is a Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog. Her size made her impossible to bring to Midgar, so she lives peacefully with Claudia. Athena is the best guard dog and keeps Claudia out of harm's way (she weighs about as much as Claudia). She's also a strong hunter who helps Claudia in her day to day life. She was definitely Cloud's girl though, and she used to sleep on his bed with him and spend her days with Cloud. She loves when he comes to visit, and she absolutely LOVES Tifa, often following her around the Strife home and cuddling Tifa happily.

 who is more likely to get injured doing small tasks: Aerith, Tifa is better at doing physical stuff in general, not saying that Aerith is weak but she hasn't had as much experience cooking or lifting heavy objects, you lift with your legs Aerith, your legs 

 who worries more about the other: Tifa, it's just second nature for her, she's practically Marlene's mom and then there's everything with the other AVALANCHE members and Cloud, so adding Aerith to that list was pretty natural for her. It didt din't take long for Tifa to realize that Aerith can take care of herself, being from basically fantasy Hell's Kitchen New York. She's surprisingly tough, you gotta be in Midgar. 

 who is more afraid about the other leaving them: Tifa again, she already that she had been left after she didn't hear anything from Cloud after he went to join SOLIDER so she's had experience with feeling like she's been left before. Plus her personality makes her predisposed to be a worrywart, she's defiantly the one who's afraid. who is more likely to leave (for any reason) 

 who is more likely to drunkenly confess: Aerith even though both her and Tifa aren't what a lot of people would consider lightweights with alcohol, Aerith is still the one who'd drunkenly confess to anything first. Also Aerith is the louder drunk of the two. 

 who is more likely to push the other away (for any reason): Tifa,

 who picks fights more often: Aerith

 who usually apologizes first: Aerith

 who is more likely to withhold their feelings for the other: Tifa, it's kinda her whole thing as a character. who is more likely to lash out at the other: They're both equally likely to lash out at each other. 

 who gets more jealous: Aerith 

 who is more likely to support the other in a relationship with someone else “as long as they’re happy”: Both actually. Aerith would understand if it turned out that Tifa was more into Cloud or Barret she'd be fine with it, same with Tifa. they're chill.

Definitely more on the inappropriate side but funny HC: Genesis introduced Sephiroth to porn. Like let’s be honest here- Hojo monitored EVERYTHING Sephiroth consumed for the longest time, so you can’t tell me he actually let teenage Seph look up whatever unsupervised on his PHS. Genesis meanwhile, upon realizing Seph had never seen adult content, decided to introduce him to the “Adult Cinema”, though it was 100% a cringy script, more than likely Loveless inspired or similar in nature. Gen definitely strikes me as someone who’s into roleplay in the bedroom (dress up threesome between the goddess and the hero and the abhorred? Sign him up!). Angeal, upon hearing about this, demanded he turned in the obscene material to Lazard before they all got into trouble.

FFVII Modern AU Headcanon: I can definitely see the Remnants needing to be medicated for various mental health concerns, but Hojo refuses because he believes they can "tough it out".

Like, they definitely all need medicated for anxiety, even if it presents differently for all of them, and I'd argue they could all benefit from other meds (personally I HC they're all a little neurodivergent)

First Class Wing Headcanons

My brainrot (mostly) from @foreststarflaime’s works on AO3, specifically “Under My Skin” and the scene with Angeal helping preen a stressed Genesis. Made me go off on a chaotic wing ramble, as someone who used to have six birds. I kept Australian Budgerigars, or Budgies, so my experience is with hookbills. Hookbills, or parrots, are classified by their distinct beak shape and zygodactyl feet (two toes forward, two toes back), which helps them with grasping things like perches, sticking landings, and picking things (often pencils off of my desk) up. Oh, and this is self indulgent so let me ramble about theoretical birdy boy headcanons. 

Wings are heavy and complex. Under this is a labeled hookbill wing I threw together for the remainder of this rambling. It is a reference of the internal bones of the wing and then a reference for the underside  of the wing. I hate drawing wings so… yeah you’re only getting the underside. It’ll serve my points well enough.

A feather dynamic that isn’t often considered (as most people jump to flight) is their role in thermoregulation. Feathers are used to control body heat by either releasing heat or trapping heat. 

Fluffing up the feathers increases space under them, which allows for body heat to be trapped and conserved as the air pockets act as natural insulation. On the flip side, feathers can be spread to expose the skin and release heat, cooling the bird (or SOLDIER) off. 

This concept is key due to the temperatures of Gaia. I’d divide Gaia into three main areas, cold, mild, and temperate. And while Midgar is in the mild section, Midgar is near completely mechanical. Machinery gives off a lot of heat, and having the ability to shift that heat off is a key trait. 

Fluffing up the feathers can also allow heat to escape, and so can compressing the plumage against the body, which traps body heat in and external heat out.

Also from a color standpoint, Genesis and Sephiroth get warmer easier because they have black wings, which absorb thermal energy from light, while Angeal has white wings. 

In my eyes, Genesis is the dramatic one who loves his wing (at least did at first, it made him feel special and like a fantastical character, before he saw it as a monstrous part of himself). That’s his giveaway that he’s upset. He is the one who takes the best care of his wing, so when he’s been lacking in his wing care, he’s probably upset. 

Sephiroth is incredibly sensitive about who is allowed to touch his wings. Hojo clipped his primary and secondary feathers (context, secondary feathers should not be clipped as they remove the ability to glide and increase the risk of a bird crashing and injuring themself) to ground him and prevent him from rebelling when he was younger. He also studied humans so he didn’t exactly care enough to sedate Sephiroth in the event he cut too much or nicked a pin feather, which bleed if cut or plucked.

Angeal is good about taking care of his wings, but he doesn’t necessarily love them. He does what he must to keep them healthy and knows that neglecting his wings only hurts himself.

Genesis is the one who has ripped out the most feathers and made himself bleed. He likes flying fast and he’s agile, so if he misjudges a distance, he can snag his wing on something and tug out feathers on accident.

Molting season is Lazard’s least favorite season by far. There are flight feathers everywhere. 

Genesis may be a SOLDIER, but he’s a baby when he’s molting. He’s irritable and more sensitive, plus he’s more likely to catch a cold as molting takes energy that would normally go to his immune system. 

Angeal usually helps Genesis out during their moltings by rubbing warm oil on his feathers and getting the wax caps off, as well as making sure he doesn’t get ingrown feathers, and removing any stubborn feathers that don’t want to shed on their own. 

Sephiroth doesn’t usually have the biggest appetite, just due to stress and his upbringing, but molting gives him quite the case of the munchies. Molting by nature takes a lot of energy and has a high caloric demand, so Sephiroth is more inclined to eat more during molting season.

Pin feathers when they first develop have blood supply, which Lazard learned the hard way after Angeal grazed his wing when putting the Buster Sword back on his back. It was after that incident that Lazard started giving the Firsts time off for their molts… until he realized that molting season can take several weeks to months. They now get a set number of “molting days” off.

Wings aren’t supposed to be attached to humans, so as one can imagine, that shit hurt like hell when the wings first developed. Hojo was intrigued.

 Sephiroth was uncomfortable but bore it, it was better than the experiments in the lab. 

Angeal was pretty used to shouldering burdens and pain. Gillian couldn’t afford to get him medical care every time something went mildly wrong, so the mentality carried into his teen years and the military.

Genesis… Genesis was on the floor certain he was dying. He was sobbing and begging the Goddess to please come take him from “this cruel world”.

The three also have developed habits typically reserved for birds. Sephiroth perches on the edge of rooftops as he has excellent balance. It helps him survey areas more efficiently. Genesis collects shiny objects like a raven. Angeal’s apartment is a meticulously organized nest. Every thread and fiber has an order in his mind. Even his plants on the windowsill have a set order that they must be in.

Odd headcanon, but you know how every family TV show seems to have the trope of the child wanting a puppy? Sephiroth wanted a pet, and Hojo for the longest time said “NO” (for obvious reasons), but when Seph finally got him to give in, Seph was given a defective lab rat to keep in his SOLDIER room. (Bonus: Lazard is terrified of rodents)

SOLDIER Mako Infusion/Enhancement Headcanon(s)

In my ideas, mako infusions are given as intravenous (IV) injections and subcutaneous (Sub-Q) injections, Sub-Q because while IV disperses throughout the whole body rapidly, Sub-Q will be injected into the fat under the skin, and that takes much longer to ‘invade’ the system.

This is important because mako is a foreign substance. The body actively attempts to metabolize it and get rid of it. For this reason, IV and Sub-Q enhancements are used in conjunction to space out infusion sessions and keep higher levels of mako in SOLDIER systems for longer.

Mako when injected gives a burning, stinging sensation because it’s incredibly toxic. Since mako cuts SOLDIER lifespans drastically, it’s safe to surmise that mako irritates the tissue it comes in contact with (and yes, blood is a tissue).

SOLDIERs aren’t allowed to take certain drugs prior to infusions, such as blood-thinners because they can cause excess bleeding.

Mako, because of its toxic nature, doesn’t have the most pleasant effects at first. They go away as a tolerance is built up, but to start off, especially when SOLDIERs first begin recieving the infusions/ehancements, such as unthriftiness, weakness, muscle stiffness, inflammation, headaches, dizziness, lack of coordination, etc.

The symptoms go away as SOLDIERs build tolerance, and over time, the body begins to become overwhelmed and it stops recognizing mako as a ‘threat’ or pathogen and just begins to allow mako to coexist in the body, even if that’s not great as mako often acts as a competitive substance in the body and can cause other health issues, especially issues due to mako taking the place of other molecules that are supposed to be in the body.

It varies based on individual, but I imagine mako infusions occur more frequently at the start to overload the body on purpose (forced coexisting), so probably at the start every 4-6 weeks, then probably every 8-12 weeks.
