As enjoyable as the jokes about Ultima panicking over Bahamut nearly destroying the world have been...it's occurred to me that they aren't quite right.
Instead, the outer space leg of the Bahamut fight was in fact a covert Ultima fight. How do I figure? Recall that in the Nexus of Origin, Ultima explains that several of his gave their bodies to become the hearts of the mothercrystals. They are a form that Ultima takes.
What looks like Bahamut consuming a mothercrystal heart is in fact Ultima possessing him.
When casting spells like Celestial Foundry or Zettaflare, the tell-tale circular formations of Ultima’s power are present.
And at last, when Clive and Joshua defeat the possessed Eikon, the mothercrystal heart departs from its body, releasing Dion. Clive then proceeds to destroy the heart, which shrieks like all the rest have.
The Zettaflare move was, in conclusion, something that Ultima was using to goad and test Ifrit Risen's potential in that moment, and was more than likely entirely in his control.
