The 100 most beautiful cars (The Daily Telegraph)

In the 60s. Toyota was Japan's most conservative carmaker. The pioneering Toyota 2000GT sports car, developed in collaboration with Yamaha, helped to shake off this image. The project began in 1963, when a team of Toyota engineers led by Jiro Kavano began to study the design of the best European sports cars of the time, including the Jaguar E-Type and Lotus Elan. In parallel, work on a similar machine was carried out by Nissan, which ordered motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha to build a new overhead engine for the Datsun Fairlady.

Then Count Albrecht Hertz, the creator of the BMW 507, joined the design of the Nissan 2000GT. At some point, Nissan abruptly abandoned the prototype in order to bring the matter to an end on its own, releasing the two-seater Datsun 240Z coupe. Then Yamaha proposed the 2000GT project to Toyota, and Toyota agreed to sell the model under its own brand through the Toyota Store dealer network, while production was organized at the Yamaha plant.

The design of the Toyota 2000GT is usually credited to Albrecht Hertz, but in reality he only drew a sketch of a prototype for Nissan, while Toyota designer Satoru Nozaki was involved in further development of the concept. As a result, the car turned out to be somewhat similar to the Jaguar E-Type, but its style was 100% Japanese, and it was noticeable in every detail. The body had a wavy waist line, a long hood, a low fastback roof with an opening rear window, triangular side windows with thin pillars, a panoramic windshield and streamlined overhangs with decorative bumpers in the form of double vertical "fangs".

The shape of the optics was partly copied from the cars of the Zagato studio: in the front there are recessed round headlights behind transparent caps, in the back there are double round lights in rectangular blocks. When it turned out that the headlights were too low to meet American standards, they were supplemented with another pair of pop-up headlights.

The two-seater cabin of the Toyota 2000GT was cramped, but expensive materials were used in its decoration: the bucket seats were covered with leather, and the dashboard, steering wheel and center console were covered with rosewood veneer. A heater and radio with automatic signal search were included as standard.

The handcrafted aluminum body of the Toyota 2000GT was mounted on a separate chassis with a 2330mm wheelbase. It consisted of a steel backbone frame with two Y-shaped ramifications and independent suspension of all wheels on double wishbones and springs.

For the first time in the practice of Japanese mechanical engineering, the car received rack and pinion steering, a 5-speed manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential, front and rear power-assisted disc brakes, a centrally located twin exhaust pipe and 15-inch magnesium alloy wheels.

The 1988cc inline 6-cylinder 3M engine was borrowed from the Toyota Crown sedan, but Yamaha engineers developed a new head with two overhead camshafts (DOHC), 12 valves and hemispherical combustion chambers for it. With three Solex twin-barrel carburettors, its output was 150 hp and gas mileage was 7.6 l / 100 km. Good aerodynamics allowed the car to accelerate to 220 km / h, and a 49:51 weight distribution along the axles ensured excellent handling.
Toyota 2000GT competed with European supercars not only on the market, but also on the racetracks.
The car was developed jointly with the Yamaha Motor Corporation. According to Toyota and Yamaha, a total of 351 2000GT vehicles were manufactured (233 units - MF10s, 109 units - MF10Ls, 9 units - MF12Ls).
