They had to put a bucket out on the top landing when it rained to catch the drips from the leaky roof, but Fiadh didn’t mind that too much. It adds to the character of the place, she’d told her mother defensively when she last came to stay, but Nora had just harrumphed and moved on down the stairs.

At least the sitting room was dry. Cosy, too.

Rain beat down hard against the windows, but they had a pile of blankets and two cups of Pandora’s steaming nettle tea to keep them warm. Gus was curled up like a hot water bottle in Fiadh's lap, and he purred when she paused to stroke him in between turning the pages of her book. Between him and Dora, whose head was resting on her shoulder so she could read along with her, and the roaring fire in the grate, Fiadh’s eyelids were starting to droop. She closed the book around her finger and stretched, disturbing both her girlfriend and the cat, who hissed his displeasure and leapt down, stalking away.

Fiadh laughed and settled back against the sofa the other way, so that she could brush Pandora’s hair back from her face and kiss her softly. “Ready for bed, love?” she asked, having to stifle a yawn. “I know I am.” Even if it did seem a waste to leave the fire going.

“Get off.” One minute, Fiadh’s sprawled across the sofa, eating Doritos and watching Dinner Date (“I can’t believe he didn’t make his own fucking meringue.”). Then, the next thing she knows, the bowl of crisps has been stolen from her hands, and there’s a great big body blocking her view of the TV. “Grey.”

He kisses her to stop her from whining, then shuffles down so she can see the screen again, but Fiadh’s barely watching now, because he’s got hold of her left ankle and is kissing very slowly and deliberately up towards her knee, where he stops and looks down before closing his lips around a raised scar, which is maybe the length of her little finger. “Oh god, don’t stop there.”

But he’s not listening. He brushes her knee with the tips of his fingers, looking up at her with his eyebrows raised, like, What happened here, then? She sighs and drops her head back against the arm of the couch. “That night, at the bar, there was broken glass everywhere. There’s one on my foot, too.” Because at some point during the night, she’d taken her heels off to dance and stood in it after everything went wrong.

She groans as Grey’s head dips lower again and kicks feebly at his shoulder when he tries to look at the sole of her foot. “You’re going the wrong way, you bastard. You started this.”

Fiadh smiles as she reads it once and then again. “Thanks, boyo.” She wraps an arm around Nicky’s shoulders, squeezes him tight against her side, and kisses the top of his head, which is not as low down anymore as it should be. “I love you too.”

Her eyes are molten and warm when they meet with Sebastian’s across the kitchen. He’s making breakfast, bacon and eggs, and it smells delicious. She’s pleasantly surprised he even remembered today. “And you, loser,” she says to him, laughing. “I love you as well. Let me try a piece?”

“This is Mufasa, and he’s my baby. He’s getting on a bit now, but. Still a very handsome man. There were so many other cats in the shelter, ones that didn’t hiss at us when we tried to get close, but he’s so like Seb ( both grumpy old boys, sure ), and he’d been there for months because no one wanted him, so we took him home. The first couple of days, we didn’t see a lot of him, but now he sleeps on the bed with me, on Seb’s side of the covers, and Seb pretends to be mad about it, but I see him sneaking him bits of bacon off his plate, so he’s not fooling anyone.

“Then we’ve got the kittens. Well, they’re not really kittens anymore either, but. Berlioz, Toulouse, and … Marie is over there. They used to fit in Seb’s cupped hands. The boys are always starting things with Marie, but she puts them in their places pretty well. Takes the top spot on the cat tower every day, even though she’s the smallest. Mufasa’s too fat to get up there these days. All Seb’s fault. He pretends he’s above all their scrapping, but I’ve seen him give the odd swat of his paw or tail to remind them who’s boss.

“I love Disney, in case you couldn’t tell. Bloody good thing, too, because we’ve got Disney+ now, and it’s on all sodding day when Nicky’s home. Back to back showings of Finding Nemo and Finding Dory.

“Nicky’s my human baby. No, sorry, I’m not allowed to call him that; he’s not a baby, he’s eight years old, don’t I know? Practically a grown up. And my mam hates it when I say ‘human’, because the cats don’t count, apparently. But that’s okay. He’s more zombie than human when he’s sitting in front of the telly, anyway. Sure, I can hardly get a word out of him. But he’ll still give me cuddles if I sit down next to him. Christ, that kid, he’s so cute. Good gene pool, see.

“We weren’t ever even going to have a kid. That’s why we ended up with so many cats. Well, that and my inability to say no to their big, beggy eyes. We were going to start out with one kitten, to see how Mufasa responded, and we ended up coming home with all three. And then having the boy anyway. Luckily, Mufasa is very tolerant, which is good for Nicky, because my baby always comes first.

“You’ve had nine months’ warning,” Fiadh grits out from behind her molars. She’s got one hand on her belly as the contraction reaches its peak, and then the pain recedes. The other’s braced against the wall, holding her up. “How long was that? We can’t go to the hospital until they’re less than five minutes apart.” She’s panting like they taught her in the pre-natal classes, in short, sharp bursts. Eyes squeezed shut in anticipation of the next one.

But as much as she’s being short with Seb as well, she kind of knows what he means. Fiadh remembers telling him, early on in her pregnancy, that it didn’t feel real yet. She hadn’t heard his heartbeat then, let alone felt him kick. And now the baby was coming. “Fuck, I’m not ready, I’m not- ow- ow- owwww.”

“Look at how big he’s gotten,” Fiadh says, shielding her eyes with her palm so that she can see Nicky racing down the beach ahead of them. She and Seb are picking their way along the shingle side-by-side, breathing in the salty air, carefree for what feels like the first time in years. 

Of course, just because Mickey and his goons are gone, that doesn’t mean everything’s going to be plain sailing from now on--someone’ll always be waiting in the wings to make a move, and they’ve got to worry about that on two fronts now that Aidan’s packed it all in--but for this one moment at least, Fiadh is determined to ignore all of that. She takes a deep breath in, savouring the bitter taste of it, then tilts her head up towards her husband’s, as if to settle her next point. 

“I don’t know what the hell your mam puts in her food, but it must be some kind of growth hormone or something. Seriously. You are all huge, and now the boy’s getting that way too. I take my eye off him for a couple of months and he shoots right up. He’s going to be taller than I am soon. Christ, at this rate, he might even get to be taller than you and then I’ll really have to give up!”
