Mellie almost screams when she hears someone approach in the alley. All these months escaping the Darkling’s grasp have set a sense of paranoia in her. Earlier in the day she’d almost considered letting him find her, but the thought dissipated in an instant. Still, her heart pounds any time someone approaches. As not only the lone sun summoner but also a reincarnation of the late Sankta Alina, she carries massive weight on her shoulders. 

“D-d-do you want something from me?” She stammers. “I don’t have anything. I was just going home.”

“I have to admit, it’s quite nice to speak in french again to someone who’s not family.” Or high and mighty about the language, either. In the three years since moving to NYC, Joey had gotten very little use out of his mother tongue. His perfect English Canadian accent would never let on that he had any french in his blood, but he was a born and bred French Canadian who’s parents enforced both languages growing up. 

“You said your name was Victor, right?” Joey asks, offering a smile. “I’m Joey. Where did you learn your french? If you don’t mind me asking.” His voice is deep but there’s a soft, velvety smoothness to it that speaks to his life-long habit of kindness.

She wasn’t certain she believed him... Call it unfortunate personal experience, but Mahia knew how terrible a wound needed to be to leave a scar like that. She’d some of her own. And the pain that’d caused them wasn’t something easy to forget...   “ May I... ask how it happened? “

a protective arm curls around the front of his plate. “uh, seriously?” he says around a mouthful of food, table manners be dammed. not that he’s ever cared that much for them, but hey, he does try to at least be somewhat civil most of the time. “you’re not picking off my plate. go poach off someone else.”
