I really want a fun campy people Constantly mistaking kitty and beth for a couple fic but instead all my brain will spit out is beth bringing kitty to meet her mum
beth warns kitty that she probably won't be responsive really but to beth's surprise her mother is chatting away to the nurse when they get there
she can't remember the last time she visited and her mum wasn't catatonic and she tears up in the doorway, kitty's hand automatically comes to rest supportively on her shoulder
they step fully into the room but before beth can introduce kitty
her mum lights up shouting in excitement
she beckons them over demanding hugs
beth does her best not to burst into tears and kitty slides her hand from beth's shoulder down to her arm in order to firmly grasp her hand in support
after a round of hugs that has kitty blinking back tears of her own they sit down
beth's mum takes one of their hands each squeezing them as tightly as her feeble grip will allow
and tells them shes so happy to see them she thought she never would again
beth's nose scrunches up in confusion but kitty places a gentle hand on her forearm before reaching out to gently grasp beth's mum's hand with the other
tells her they're so happy they were able to see her
the nurse tells beth softly that it's seems to be sometime in the 50's for her mum today
beth can understand that perfectly well she'd been taking care of her mum alone before finding this place but is still baffled watching kitty interact with her mum like they're family
until her mother's voice breaks through her thoughts asking 'auntie gin' if this means she can still come visit the horses in the summer
it takes a minute for beth to register her mum is talking to her and she flounders
kitty swoops back in, asking her about horses while beth tries to recalibrate
then her mum calls kitty 'aunt ann' and beth damn near has a heart attack suddenly remembering her mother's great great aunt ginny and her companion ann who her mother always, if rarely at all, spoke of with the utmost fondness
her mother had loved both of those women fiercely, spending summers on their farm for the early years of her life
ginny died in her late 90's when her mum was around 12 and ann followed almost immediately after
beth hadn't thought about them in years
mum- beth cuts herself off when she sees confusion and panic starting to cloud her eyes and quickly changes track
why did you think you wouldn't see us again?
well you've died haven't you her mum says, surprisingly steady like dead people show up to tea all the time
beth takes a minute to think about how to phrase what she wants to know under these constraints, settles on asking how she knew it was them
her mum looks at her like she's kind of stupid and says with all the attitude of one of beth's 'problem' students well who else would you be
kitty ever so gently nudges the woman in the wheelchair conspiratorially and says why not indulge a few old ladies eh
beth watches in awe as kitty effortlessly charms her mother who giggles actually giggles at kitty
before smiling and dropping a bomb
she tells them it's cause she's never seen two people more in love, teases that it's always been apparent before they even enter a room and still is
before becoming more serious, telling them not to worry that she hasn't told just like she promised she wouldn't swearing solemnly
and beth realizes she hadn't not in all those years, beth's an english teacher she had read between the companion lines but still it was never said
and then beth's brain grinds to almost a complete stop as she and an equally gobsmacked kitty listen to beth's mum stuck in the past waxing poetic about how their love was so palpable they couldn't possibly be anyone else
beth watches in fascinated horror as her mum slips through time a bit in front of her eyes saying her name suddenly but as if shes still speaking to her aunt gin i wish you could've met my wonderful beth she tells beth herself
maybe if she saw your kind of love up close she wouldn't have married that martin fellow, he was never good enough for her and i don't think she ever could have been truly happy with him her mum muses
when it looks like beth might start hyperventilating kitty redirects attention and suddenly beth's mum is back to chatting about potential summer plans like nothing had just happened
beth quickly excuses herself and kitty looks after her in concern but understands from her headshake that she needs a minute
when beth comes back she seems to have compartmentalized and they spend a pleasant if bizarre afternoon half roleplaying as her mum's lesbian great aunts
beth is suddenly hyper aware of every casual absentminded touch between her and kitty, every moment of unspoken communication, it doesn't help her mum is pointing it all out and more as 'evidence' her two favorite aunts' love
overwhelmed beth at least gets a chance to tell her more about the band while her mum can sort of comprehend
they end up having a bit of a sing along and beth has to quietly excuse herself once again before she starts bawling at kitty and her mum singing together
but not before managing to get it on video
all too soon her mum fades starting to nod off and they say their goodbyes
kitty goes out to the car giving beth a minute to say bye on her own
but her mum's gone unresponsive so all beth can really do is gently kiss the woman good night while trying not to drown in the identity crisis her mother's triggered
to add insult to injury on the way out the carer stops beth to commend her partner's handling of the situation, tells her it's heartening to see family members embrace the moments like today when the love shines through the displacement
when beth gets out to the car she wordlessly hands kitty the keys and climbs into the passenger seat mind absolutely reeling
this visit gave her much more than she ever anticipated to think about and her brain is spiraling as she tries not to feel completely unmoored from her life just after feeling like she'd got her feet back under her
somehow despite the chaos in her mind she doesn't even notice when she reaches across the console, kitty's hand linking up with hers instinctively
the first opportunity kitty gets after beth sorts out her comp het and it's no longer too soon she mercilessly teases her about how having a thing for younger red heads apparently runs in the family
