One of the most underappreciatied tragedies of Jet’s story is how he died. 

On the one hand, he died fighting. This makes sense for his character. If he could have chosen his own manner of death, that is what he would have chosen. He was always a fighter, why should he want to die any differently than how he lived? 

Jet saw the world in a tragically black-and-white way. Fire Nation = bad, Earth Kingdom = good. He didn’t understand compromise, couldn’t comprehend a life of peace. And so his death was almost the one he would have imagined. 

But he didn’t die fighting the Fire Nation. He died fighting the Dai Li-- his own people. Because neither good nor evil are the sole domains of one side or another. 

And-- perhaps most tragically of all-- his death was a waste. He died trying to free someone who had already been saved. Saved by the very person he wrote off as the epitome of evil-- someone from the Fire Nation.

I don’t know what worse between the unexpected death of a character, that takes you completely by surprise when you’re not ready for that emotional shock, or the death that you know is coming, because you see all the foreshadowing, all the nice gestures that the characters make to them, all of the last phrases that are said to them.

Unexpected deaths are so surprising and they just hit right where it hurts the most. But seeing a character have dreams and expectations for their lives when you know they’re going to die soon.You see everything to differently when you know that the character is going to die.

Merlin’s joy at meeting his dad? Nadia’s dream of being a police officer? Primrose’s wish to become a nurse? Dreams make death so much harder
