“I’ve Grown Accustomed to His Face”

or, oh crap, I wrote 300+ words of an ending to a My Fair Lady/Pygmalion Ted Lasso fic I will (probably) never finish. Trent Crimm is obviously a Henry Higgins-type, and Ted Lasso could be an Eliza in this scenario, if you squint.  

Is there much crossover between the MFL fandom and the Ted Lasso fandom? PROBABLY NOT. Did I put too many references to the musical in here that very few people will get? YES. Will that deter me from posting this? 

No. (Under a cut, though.)

“Why, Mr. Lasso, what the dickens do you mean? Haven’t I shown you every kindness?”

“You have,” says Ted, his infuriating twang leaping out after all this time. “And I’m grateful to you. But there’s a difference between showin’ kindness and bein’ kind.”

“Showing and being.”

“What?”

“It’s showing and being. You know that. I taught you that.”

Ted sighs and shakes his head, before grazing his mustache with those long fingers of his. “You just don’t get it.”

Trent knows he’s not exactly making a case for himself by being a grammarian, but dammit, it’s in his nature. Still, the sadness in Ted’s eyes makes him want to try to be better. “Teach me. How to be kind.”

“It’s not something you teach,” and Ted shakes his head and begins to walk away. But Trent reaches out and grabs him by the crook of his elbow.

“I’ve taught you how to be a proper gentleman. You could pass for an heir to a society woman at this point. Some said that was impossible. Not something you teach.” Trent realizes he’s letting desperation slip into his voice, but he can’t lose Ted, not now.

He can’t lose the soul of the damn man, who he…he’s grown accustomed to at this point. The bristly mustache he won’t shave, how he slips into his folksy twang when he’s not around anyone but Trent, the American tunes he whistles night and noon…his voice, his hands, his face.

Ted turns to Trent, and he gently pries Trent’s hand off his arm, and Trent realizes he’s been squeezing Ted, practically holding him so he won’t run away. Ted places a hand on Trent’s cheek, shakes his head, and walks out of the study.

Trent stays there for a minute, swaying a little, like he’s a tree on the edge of a hurricane.

And then, he runs after Ted, because if he loses him, he’ll be as lost as he’s ever been.

Sharon eyes Ted, as if to ask, “Are you okay with that?” and Ted just straightens his spine and goes with Professor Crimm. The professor opens the door to the greenhouse and lets Ted go ahead of him, which Ted finds entirely unexpected. The greenhouse is large and green and gorgeous; it’s the best sight Ted’s seen in all of London.

That is, until he turns around and sees Professor Crimm biting his lip and wringing a hankie.

“What’s wrong?” Ted asks, as if he doesn’t know.

“I was going to ask if you wanted to…if you wanted to dance. I have no idea as to your preferences…” and Professor Crimm looks down at his shined shoes.

Ted doesn’t really know what his preferences are these days, so he just says: “As long as you lead, Professor.”

Professor Crimm comes up to him and takes his hands, ready to waltz and says, softly: “I think you can call me Trent, Ted.”

“Oh…” Ted replies, but he recovers quickly. “Alright, Trent.”

Trent starts dancing with Ted slowly, and they stay slow. It’s not like the dance they engaged in after Ted got the exercise right.

Their faces are inches from each other as the dance gets even slower, even more intimate, and Ted’s seized with an urge to close the distance between them.

So, he does, kissing Trent, back to timid. He finds Trent kissing him back, and they stop dancing, Ted reaching his right hand around Trent’s hair and placing it on that magnificent mane of his. Trent doesn’t complain about Ted’s mustache, he just keeps kissing him, and soon enough, they’re engaged in what Miss Jones from the shop calls ‘a jolly good snog,’ and Trent moans that familiar moan, and Ted doesn’t want it to ever stop.

I recognize him.

The skinny, tall, new detective with the offensive mustache.

Well, he’s not new to me, at least. I wrack my brain for his name, but I come up short. Liv catches me staring and clears her throat. “Detective Carisi, ADA Barba.”

Leo McGarry is tired of waiting.

Well, he’s tired of waiting for a lot of things, but in this case, it’s waiting for Marbury to get off his fucking yacht. Marbury had invited Leo and Jed on a sightseeing trip of the Currituck Sound off the shore of North Carolina. Marbury wouldn’t shut up about it, and Jed likes Marbury more than he hates nature, so he agreed to it. Why he forced Leo to go along with it…okay, Jed doesn’t force Leo to do anything, because that’s impossible: Leo will follow Jed into hell or high water.

Turns out this time it was high water.

They’ve finally docked, and Leo’s the first off of the boat; he hates water and ships more than he hates the air and planes, which is saying something. But Marbury, already more than enough tipsy, is taking his time leaving his prize. Jed looks at Leo with a glance that seems to say “Sorry, but you agreed to this,” and Leo shoots back a glare that says “Only because you’re you, Mr. President” but the glare lands on Marbury, not Jed. Marbury cocks his head at Leo.

“Why Gerald, what’s wrong?” That just sets Leo’s teeth on edge, because if Marbury could just fucking call him Leo it would make things so much easier. Leo hates boats, and right now, he’s starting to hate Marbury. But he responds as kindly as he can.

“Just glad to be on dry land again.”

Marbury’s eyes darken with concern. “Jed, you should’ve told me he hates boats.”

Jed laughs a little nervously: “It never came up.”

“I could take you up on my 2-seater next. Maybe you’d prefer that--”

“Hell no,” Leo growls, pushing past the two men as he hurries down the dock towards the SUV waiting for them.

On the way to the train that will take them back to DC, Leo mostly just looks out the window, while Jed and Marbury discuss important matters of state in between bites of gossip. Leo knows Marbury keeps looking over at him, and he wishes he would stop.

On the yacht, Marbury had chattered Leo’s ear off about something which Leo couldn’t really focus on, trying not to get sick off the mild waves and the smell of alcohol on Marbury’s breath. Leo really wishes John would stop drinking.

And he also really wishes he would stop calling Marbury “John” in his head when he’s fretting about him. He feels Marbury staring at him again, so he stares right back. This seems to awaken something heated in Marbury, from the look in his dark, brown, bottomless eyes.

Leo starts to feel sick again.

At the train station, Jed boards the train, but Marbury tugs on Leo’s sleeve and stops him from following.

“Leo, I feel like we keep getting off on the wrong foot, ever since--”

“Maybe if you called me Leo instead of Gerald…”

“Right, right. All in good fun.”

Leo just grunts at that.

“You didn’t have to come, but you did. The invitation was to Jed and Abbey. But he brought you along instead.”

“Abbey was busy.”

“Right. Of course.”

“She was.”

“You didn’t have to come. You’re more than Jed’s whipping boy,” and Leo takes offense to that, as well as the hand that’s come to rest on his arm. He shakes off Marbury’s gesture.

“I serve at the pleasure of the President.”

“But not any President.”

“I was Secretary of Labor once upon a time, you know.” The train’s whistle blows, and Leo can hear Jed yelling his name over it.

“Leo--”

“I’ve got to go, John,” he says, and turns to go, but Marbury grabs his hand for a moment and doesn’t let go. Leo really hopes Jed isn’t watching this. But he doesn’t yank his hand away, either. The two men just share the moment together, and Leo, for a moment, considers leaving with John on his 2-seater to anywhere that Jed Bartlet isn’t.

The train’s whistle blows more urgently this time, and Leo detaches his hand from Marbury’s. “When I’m in DC next, let’s talk?” Marbury puts this as a question rather than a statement, and it’s almost a concession of weakness coming from him.

“I’ll almost certainly have plans,” Leo says, hoarsely.

“And I won’t mind wrecking them. Gerald.” Leo scoffs a little and even rolls his eyes, before boarding the train.

He finds Jed sitting in his seat embroidered with the seal of the President, just another reminder of the awesome power his friend embodies.

“What the hell was that all about?” Jed says, not looking up from his pile of papers. Leo just shrugs.

Leo looks out the window at the train platform, all concrete and metal. And there’s Marbury, willowy as ever, lifting a hand in a gesture that says “See you later,” as opposed to merely “Goodbye”.

And then the British man does something utterly ridiculous, which makes Leo smile in spite of himself. Marbury puts his hand to his heart.

Leo copies the gesture. He’s just full of surprises today, he guesses.

This time, Jed is looking at the two of them. He goes back to looking at his papers, glasses on the tip of his nose. “You and John, huh? God, what’s next?”

But Leo doesn’t respond. He just looks out the window until the platform and the other man vanish from view. You and John, Jed had said. It doesn’t have a terrible ring to it.

50!!! As of today, tomorrow (hopefully) it will be 51. 😉

2)     what’s your total AO3 word count?

92,479…I write lots of small fics, tbf.

3)     how many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

in ao3? which is the only place I’ve published, currently: 26 fandoms, apparently…and it’s kind of all over the place. lots of one-shots in various fandoms. the most extensive ones I’ve written for are The Expanse, The West Wing, Turn, and Frontier.   

4)     what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

“Open Your Eyes” (Fem!Q/Bond, which is like one of the first things I ever posted, nearly eight years ago at this point)

“tenderest touch leaves the darkest of marks and the kindest of kisses breaks the hardest of hearts” (Casablanca, one of my personal faves)

“you don’t have to be a ghost here among the living, you are flesh and blood, and you deserve to be loved and you deserve what you are given, and oh how much” (The Terror, look, I was on a lyrics kick)

“i’m no hero, i just like punching people in the face” (Ted Lasso, bless Trent/Ted, kings of my heart)

“Look for the Helpers” (another Terror fic, which I personally don’t love, but hey. glad people like it! thanks for y’all’s support as I bumble along)

5)     do you respond to comments, why or why not?

unless someone is being an ass, of course! I love talking to people under any circumstances, but especially about my work!!

6)     what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

uh. hm. I suppose “Fever 1793” for Frontier, where, on a depressed whim, I killed off Cobbs in the Philadelphia Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793. OOPS. I still kinda feel bad about that.

7)     what’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

well…I’m not much for purely happy, but I feel like the first Bellevue fic I wrote, “because i am done with my graceless heart, so tonight i’m gonna cut it out and then restart” gives a “happy” ending in so much as the two characters who should’ve ended up together end up together.

8)     do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

for the most part, no. I did start writing an Expanse/Harry Potter fic, but there’s not a lot of crossover, mostly just set in the universe itself. like, Harry Potter himself isn’t gonna show up.

9)     have you ever received hate on a fic?

never directly. (I have received weird comments, though.) I’ve seen strong dislike on Tumblr itself (mostly related to Chrisjen/Sadavir), but eh. Let them fume, chemistry is chemistry is chemistry, Jesse.

10) do you write smut? if so what kind?

no, I am a master of fade to blacks, and by master, I mean I rely on them like a CRUTCH

11) have you ever had a fic stolen?

I hope not!

12) have you ever had a fic translated?

someone offered to translate a poem once, and I said sure, but I never heard anything else…but if they did translate it, bravo, good for them, translating is hard, and I personally can’t do it.

13) have you ever co-written a fic before?

not officially…I’ve definitely collab’d on broader AU ideas with friends (shout out to @terribleoldwhitemen in particular)

14) what’s your all time favorite ship?

I literally will not answer that because 1) impossible and 2) the first one that springs to mind is kind of. Embarrassing.

15) what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

FOR WANT OF A FUCKING NAIL. Maybe I will…MAYBE.

16) what are your writing strengths?

dialogue, capturing character’s voices, internal narratives (I think? I hope?)

17) what are your writing weaknesses?

sustaining a plot, anything remotely smutty, and yeah, I’ll agree, FINISHING THE DAMN THING

18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I’ve done brief snippets of other languages, but only with quite a bit of research. I’ll probably never write full on conversations, because I’m not fluent in ANYTHING. (Except for English.)

19) what was the first fandom you wrote for?

…that goes back to my all-time favorite ship answer. I’ll just say…tsbc. if you can decipher that, yeah. YEAH.

20) what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

oh gosh. all of them? because I’m vain, and also because I really write fics for myself and like, two other people, so I like going back and re-reading all of them! but if I was pushed? I’m really fond of a fic for The West Wing, “Foxholes and the Oval,” where Lord John Marbury gets to talk to Leo post-heart attack. I like fics that fill badly needed holes. (HA.)
