You are absolutely right that fic etiquette is dying and it’s a fucking shame. I also need you to know that I work in a professional setting and I read hr as Human Resources and not Heated Rivalry and had a serious second of panic that there was an hr of fanfic

Anyway people need to be nicer to fic authors and (this is a hot take) fandom spaces of queer media do not feel safe and fun when the general (straight) public is also in that space. They are often not kind and open minded and supportive the way the queer community typically is with each other, and the queer people in that space get punished for it

I hate saying its one fandom (bc its a trait in every fandom, though I think some have it worse, like dc and several anime fandoms where authors were chased off ao3 and harassed to the point of deleting fic) but if i HAD to put a finger to it, i noticed it got really rampant around the time Heated Rivalry began integrating knowledge of Ao3 to mainstream. Links to fic in journalistic articles and rampant discussion amongst cast and crew. The book it was based on was based off of fic. HR owes a lot lf its success to fandom and fic culture!

(and side note: artists, ily, and i want you to know i see how valuable artists are in fandom and I include unnecessary critical comments about your art as part of evidence of dwindling fandom cultures)

Once Ao3 became mainstream, more people access it. Duh..Most general and tbh! Straight audiences! Access it! Fanfiction has roots in queer history, in queer culture. Nearly every queer person I know has engaged with fic. It's never been a source of shame, but it isn't a hobby I personally share with the few cishet friends I have. (nor my allo friends, which is a whole other story involving The Pitt and I cannot handle that fandom sometimes). There was levity and creative joy, and QUEER JOY in fandom.

Fic has become mainstream and marketable and a popularity contest. Who rides what trends the best. It's less about enjoyment and expression and more about who makes the most palatable and morally "right" work. Who gets the most credits and kudos etc etc. Which is exhausting on its own.

Then factor in that no one on the internet can keep a negative opinion to themselves. Because we can link omegaverse fic in an article about Hudson Williams, we can suddenly screenshot an old fic and talk about how "absolutely shit" the characterization is. We can apparently @ an author and tell them they suck. Because... what? We have nothing better to do? Because you're reliving high school when the cool thing to do was nod along and "yes, and...?" the crudest bully at the table for a few retweets? It's cruel and disrespectful.

I hate, also, being the person to say this. But... dude, I'm 24. which is geriatric by fandom standards, apparently. and most the people sniping at fic are new to fandom (like last three years; in contrast i've been in fandom over thirteen years, actively writing posting and engaging in content, i know some who've been in well over a decade) and unwilling to consider etiquette. which makes no sense to me. fuck, I don't even talk bad about fic in my dms. it's cruel, its mean spirited, and time Is best spent elsewhere imo.

I don't know. It's exhausting. It's why I left larger fandoms (pjo.... bsd..... VOLTRON) and even the smaller fandoms are getting nasty. cruelty is hip and hatred makes you feel powerful. Ship wars and purity culture and dynamic discourse..... this is all so exhausting, and idk it's not the culture I grew up loving anymore :/

im oddly reassured someone else has noticed it, i've felt absolutely crazy at the immense lack of care or respect or even basic decency towards fan creators these days :(

Second of all. God. Right?? I alarmed a few of my IRL friends. I read books 1&2 back to back. I stayed up way too late finishing book 2 and had to go to work the next day and all I could think about was getting home to read book 3. Today I read the short story collection. I love them your honor OTL

Laurent reminded me of some of my favorite Tim interpretations every now and then - always having something cutting to say, needing alone time to think and then coming up with not only a new, better plan but setting five other things in motion to support it. Being very reluctantly in love with a man who could very easily kill him who said that

Damen was made in a lab for Me Specifically, and he reminded me of how I like to write Jason too sometimes alskdndks just. Being fed up 24/7 with awful people doing awful things, sassy rejoinders that he simply cannot stop himself from saying. That "too late, sweetheart" early early in the first book was SUCH a Jason moment to me, I could see that bath scene happening SO easily with jaytim skcnfjdkjd

If (IF!!!!) I were gonna write jaytim captive prince style (and not just my gladiator fic lmao), I'd have to change a lot of things around because the setting and politics of it all are so beautifully and importantly about Damen and Laurent lol, and they are not actually 1-1 Jason and Tim.

BUT... Obviously. Tim would be in Laurent's role and Jason would be in Damen's. And obviously Tim's older brother, Dick, would be absent for sad plot reasons. And obviously Jason was betrayed by his mother, Sheila, who sold him to one direction the enemy country of which Tim is the prince. Unclear still what the exact feeling about Jason would be, and if he has anything to do with Dick not being around (or if Dick is even dead at all...!) but what makes captive prince so tasty is that Laurent HATED Damen, and Damen had to hide who he was so he just had to TAKE IT. Which of course means that for whatever reason, Tim hates Jason on sight. And for whatever reason, Jason has to take whatever abuse is thrown his way.

Oh. Oooooh could be... Okay throw a bunch of stuff out. Could be that Tim is in the court of Ra's al Ghul OwO. Maybe Tim is a foreign prince who's lived there in asylum for some time, and Jason was made a present to Tim because Jason's country was responsible for driving Tim into asylum in the first place OwO.

Still up in the air whether Jason's identity is out in the open or if he's been made a scapegoat just like Damen was. Then you could have a bunch of bouncing off Ra's and Talia and Damian and the friends Tim made in Red Robin among the assassins... And there's the omnipresent danger of Tim being beholden to Ra's court OwO. He's not so much protected as he is a hostage OwO. Just like Damen, Jason was meant to be a taunt for Tim, something to force him into acting out and giving Ra's further leverage.

Basically, this captive prince au would be a surprise Brucequest au, this time with 100% more Jason in skimpy slave boy outfits, having belligerent sexual tension with a skittish, political double-speaking Tim (so. Tim.) (The king is missing. Tim's brother Dick is preparing to be crowned. He doesn't believe Tim's letters that Bruce is alive and that he's going to find him.)

And I'm stopping there. You CANT DO THIS TO ME, werewolf fic is already crying itself to sleep every night while I dally with gladiator fic, okay, I refuse to write this au--

He tracks the clanks, the hard flat tones of lightweight steps on metal, clocks the strange and infrequent hissing like…steam?

It takes him a moment longer than he’d admit, but he realizes the kid is not in school but likely near some type of commercial building (most likely a factory). The alarm doesn’t set in until he remembers the kid was talking about the Riddler and oh heck-

Clark stands abruptly, attracting the unwanted attention of his coworkers. “Bad breakfast burrito,” he says sheepishly to their inquiring looks, and walks away fast, pretty sure no one will follow him.

The concept of people shit talking anyone’s work (let alone yours) makes me want to scream. I am so, so sensitive to feedback (negative feedback even more so) and I’m sorry that you are having to learn how to deal with negative comments and criticism. It’s a skill that I don’t have very much of and I’m impressed with how adult you are being about the whole thing. People who hate on fanworks are often too lazy and cowardly to make their own and frankly, should shut the hell up. Private it for your own sake <3 and don’t ever stop writing. I promise that there is far more love in the world for your works than anything negative <3333 best of luck through this trying time (and please yes take time for yourself. thank you! i took a walk and worked on schoolwork and took care of some health stuff (sigh i have heart problems) and i'm alright! (I actually have a wonderful new tea bottle to make iced tea 🥹)

this is far from the first time i've gotten unnecessary hate on fic (thanks bsd fandom), but frankly when it started i was a lot younger and people pleasing and went, "okay let me change my work to get approval" and that just can't work anymore! and tbh? it's just frustrating and no longer worth the trouble. the critique has been heard loud and clear, and to be honest, that's fine. i can work on this fic on my own, in peace, when it's private. without the pressure and the derogatory comments about my writing style or how "fucking annoying" my word count is. i'll write for myself and that's fine :)

I love this fic and i don't especially want to deal with getting hounded in my ask box for choosing to put it on hiatus, either. it's still a fic I have poured my heart and soul into, and im finishing it for myself and likely my eyes alone. oh well. it is what it is. people want me to stop posting this fic, i'll stop posting. see, I CAN take feedback, anon :) I admit I sound petty, but. im trying to be mature about this. I promise.

I feel the need to urge you to read the comments on black magic before you pull it. Do what’s best for you, but don’t take anything down because you feel like people don’t want to read it/see stuff from you. I have notifs on and I see you answer kind ask after complimentary ask. People enjoy your work and the people in your community are privileged to view what you create. Again, do what’s best for you, but remember that readers are overjoyed when you post, not fatigued. Writing more is never a bad thing!

(And if you do pull it, make sure to screenshot all 14 pages (nearly 270?) reader comments first. You should get to keep those encouraging words)

ahhhh thank you so much for this <3 no, trust, i value every comment i get and i'd never just... toss it out like that. the fic itself isn't going to be deleted, just privated for some time. i actually do want to go through and reread it and probably finish it for myself, tbh. a lot of the interest and support kind of just dwindled over time and it turned into shittalk on other sites and hate comments i've had to delete or just swallow my pride over, so i'm... yeah. i hate that this comes across like me going, "fucking fine" but i wrote this fic for myself and i plan to finish it for myself, because it's the first multichapter fic i've finished. i won't delete it, i might just upload the last ten chapters and post them all at once. but the good comments i used to get are very dear to me, and i cherish those quite a bit i wouldn't dream of deleting them <3

i've been staring at the last chapters and debating whether to post them or not. i've been given some feedback on my writing which leads me to believe i write too much, it's too exhausting, too fast, too too too, etc etc. and i just don't have the patience for that sort of messaging rn. i love this fic, i want to continue loving it, and i need to figure out how i can do that while still finishing it because it's a matter of pride. maybe monthly updates. maybe i just end it here and keep the ending to myself. idk yet. but i can't deal with the "oh, sigh, that fucking fic updated again" that i keep seeing. i get it. message received, atp. sorry, my tone is harsh.
