“But, like…what if they hate me?”
“Oh my Thor, Magnus, they aren’t gonna hate you,” Alex groaned, running a hand down his face. His longer hair was pulled back in a tiny ponytail, his sweater on to combat the chillier weather of Magnus’s room; he was a boy that day. It responded with the seasons, apparently, showing a cool, comfortable fall for that day.
Magnus was stressing the Helheim out. There were a handful of new Einherjar that had arrived, and a few of them were having a terrible time settling in. Magnus had drawn the short end of the stick and was appointed to show them around and try to get them used to their afterlives. He definitely didn’t feel ready for that.
“You have to say that. You’re my boyfriend,” the blonde pouted, thumping his head on Alex’s shoulder blades. It was a comfy place to rest his head as he imploded.
“No, it’s because I know you, Beantown.” Alex gently grabbed Magnus’s hands, wrapping them around his waist. “You’re cool, brave, know how to use a sword, and have taken down big bad dieties. Translation: super fucking awesome. Those kids’ll commit every word you say to memory.”
Was Alex exaggerating? A bit, yeah, but Magnus needed the confidence. His low self-esteem was really the only thing holding him back from connecting with the new arrivals. It was his job to hype the boy up.
“I guess…but what if they can tell I’m scared of fucking up? You know how sweaty my palms get—”
“That’s it!” Alex snapped; he was done listening to Magnus doubt himself. Yanking the boy’s arms above his head, he flipped around and straddled Magnus’s lap. Then, before he could ask what was happening, he gave his side a firm squeeze.
“HAhahahey! Alex!” Magnus yelped and tugged at his arms, eyes nervously meeting his boyfriend’s. As they’d discovered during a peaceful cuddle, the blonde was decently ticklish. The look on Alex’s face meant he was about to abuse that fact.
“I’m tired of you doubting yourself.” The greenette’s free hand moved to his captive’s stomach, gently wiggling into the sensitive flesh. “You only learn things the hard way, so we're doing this the hard way.”
“I-Ihihi'm nohot trying tohohoho!” Magnus all but whined through his laughter, a blush quickly overtaking his features. Alex loved the way his nose scrunched up as he laughed.
“You're not exactly trying to stop, either,” he scolded, giving the rim of Magnus’s navel a little scratch. The resulting squeak was adorably ear-piercing. “An attempt at optimism could be made, or at least realism.”
“Ihi aham beheheing realistic!” Although he was in no position to fight him, Magnus decided to challenge Alex. “Th-thehere’s a real chahahance thehey’ll hahate me!”
“Okay, I'll humor you. Why would they hate you?” Alex was letting him speak, though the tickling never stopped. The shapeshifter lazily traced swooping lines under and across Magnus's navel as he listened to the bullshit.
“Thehey could nohotihice my scahahars, ahask me quehehestions I cahan't ahahanswer, see hohow nervouhuhus I ahaham…” Magnus squirmed as he spoke, the gentle tickles making his skin crawl. It was still fun, but also maddening.
“Maggie…c’mon, you’ve gotta know that’s overkill.” Alex sighed, gently lowering Magnus’s arms. He took both his boyfriend’s hands into his own, pressing a little kiss to his forehead. “That’s your nasty thoughts talking. These kids are just as lost as you were when you showed up. If anything, they’re gonna be grateful for you.”
“I… I know that, but I can’t stop thinking otherwise.” Magnus took a few deep breaths as he settled back down. The way Alex had gone from playful to sincere made his head spin; he’d never understand how he could turn on a dime like that.
“Hmm.” Alex didn’t seem to like that answer. He knew Magnus’s anxiety couldn’t simply be shut off, but he still didn’t want the blonde to think like that. “Anything I can do to help?”
“Uhm…could you pretend to be one of them? J-just so I can kinda rehearse?” Magnus seemed nervous as he asked, looking from his boyfriend to fidget. Rehearsing conversations generally made him feel more confident in himself, though he couldn’t explain why.
“Yeah, whatever helps. Lemme get into character.” Alex smirked before shapeshifting into a different person; his skin grew darker, his hair thickened and turned pink, and he grew four inches. “There. Instruct me.”
“Uh…wow. Okay.” Magnus blinked, still amazed by Alex’s powers. The way Alex was able to shift into someone else he’d only seen was remarkable. “So…uh, how’ve you been settling in?”
“Pretty terribly, honestly. I don’t know why I’m here, it’s scary, and someone stabbed me a few hours ago. It’s kinda freaky.” Alex got into character almost immediately, making up problems he thought the new arrivals might’ve had.
“Yeah, it is a bit freaky. You’re, uh…” Magnus swallowed, his eyes meeting Alex’s. The shapeshifter nodded encouragingly, so he continued. “You’re here because you died heroically, and because you were in battle while doing so. It’s kinda odd, but you’re in a good place. You get used to the madness eventually.”
“Oh. Cool.” Seeing Magnus get the hang of things, Alex decided to mess around. He stepped closer, grabbing the blonde’s chin. “There’s a couple things I’d like to get used to...”
“Oh my— Alex, that is so weird,” Magnus groaned, pulling away from his boyfriend’s teasing touch.
Alex snorted and shifted back, pressing a little kiss on his cheek. “Aww, you’re blushing. You know you love me~”
“Yeah, I do…” Magnus huffed, pulling Alex in for a proper kiss. “And…thanks for helping me with this. Seriously, you’re amazing.”
“I know, and you’re welcome."
The son of Frey rolled his eyes and tugged Alex down to lie in his room’s grass. He felt lighter than he had that morning, the pressurized sickness in his stomach having disappeared. He was kinda confident in himself for once; it was nice. And it was mostly thanks to Alex being amazing.
