My FIFPRO World XI.
Buffon – Lahm, Chiellini, Kompany, Jordi Alba – Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta – Cristiano Ronaldo, Falcao, Messi. COACH: JOSE MOURINHO
In January we will see FIFA name both their world player of the year but possibly more significantly, in my opinion, who the best team of the year would be if they could have any of the players on the planet in a team together from anyone on the planet based on their form of the previous twelve months. Above is my choice, I will justify it in this article. By the way, Lionel Messi is no doubt the best player in the world in my opinion, even though Cristiano Ronaldo possess are far more diverse set of skills.
Buffon picks himself in goal as he guided his club Juventus to only one league loss in 2012 and an unbeaten 2011-12 season as well as helping Italy reaches the final of the European Championships. Iker Casillas is probably the only candidate as competition as he help Real Madrid wrestle the title from Barcelona and captained Spain to EURO 2012 victory. Manuel Neuer is probably the other top goalkeeper in the world in 2012. Buffon wins for me as he contributes more to his team than Casillas did to either of his.
The defence is probably the most controversial choice with only one Spaniard. Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos are both unlucky to miss out but this is my choice, not FIFA’s. Lahm is chosen at right back, despite Bayern and Germany doing very little in 2012. A better all round player than Dani Alves or any other right back in world football. Chiellini is picked above both Spaniards for the same reasons I picked Buffon above Casillas. He just does more for his team in my opinion. Left back was also a difficult choice but Jordi Alba, particularly in the Euros, just looked other worldly at the position. In my opinion, this is the one position that lacks a truly transcendent player at the position. Kompany led his club to their first title for over fifty years and was a true maverick in the position. He is a fine center back, and deserves his place for his form over the last twelve months but will be left out for a Spaniard I imagine.
The midfield, if they ever did play together, would never give the ball up. This truly reflects the nature of football in the world these days. There is no powerhouse, in the mold of a Yaya Toure or a Bastian Schweinsteiger. All three truly technically fantastic, all truly special at what they do with the ball. All have great vision and on the ball ability. In reality, they would never work as a trio due to lack of balance but they are undoubted the three finest players in the position this year. Pirlo is particular deserves a mention for his comeback after being released by AC Milan in 2011.
The strikerforce is probably more debatable than the midfield. Even if Messi and Ronaldo pick themselves, as the finest of this generation and possibly any generation ever, the debate for which player fills the spot up front is debatable. I went with Falcao, possibly influenced by his five goal game recently, but Robin van Persie can feel extremely hard done by. Falcao led Athletico to a trophy, something van Persie could not do at Arsenal. Van Persie is probably the more consistent player but Falcao is more magnificent and that’s why he gets the nod. Neymar deserves a mention for the spot on the wing as an alternate for being the finest player outside Europe, as does David Silva for his great year. Zlatan could also merit a role up top, but personally van Persie and Falcao are the two who you should choose between despite Ibrahimovic’s penchant for the spectacular on an all too regular basis.
