John Rutledge’s anger toward those he perceives as taking advantage of his family’s tragedy is understandable, especially as he and his son cope with a two-year-old who has just lost his mother, and who will one day need to be informed of the reason why. But it is also unsurprising, since media coverage and national attention toward gun violence tends to be episodic rather than continuous...
But unless the public’s view toward gun violence shifts from episodic to cumulative, tragedies like the one the Rutledge family now faces will continue to occur, and the John Rutledges of the world will have to face groups trying to use his family’s personal tragedy as political fodder.
