Ace Detective Akirah Satou found herself taking on guard duty… stationed in an opulent mansion, she stood in full view of a glass case. Inside rested a priceless heirloom, a necklace of diamonds with each one big enough to fit in her palm… Akirah adjusted the beret on her head before patrolling beside the case, on full alert.
She requested this thankless task herself after learning that the necklace was being targeted. A calling card had been sent to the owner the day before, with a trademark Akirah knew all too well: A burning feather, the brand of infamous Phantom Thief Icarus. He managed to avoid and evade the grasp of police for months before Satou started her investigation, a ‘menace’ according to the chief. With every heist he pulled, the closer the detective got to him… now, she was closer than ever, and all she had to do was wait.
… she’d spent a long time chasing this Thief, it almost felt like a game. She’d even seen him in action herself… his blue hair was even more distinctive than the black mask he wore. It might have even been a little fun, tracking him… but now, their game had to end. Her career depended on it.
The detective continued her leisure stroll about the fancy room, pausing every now and then to check herself over. The case was still undisturbed, the room was still silent save her footsteps…. and her pistol remained holstered, safely in her belt. Not that she expected the Thief to harm her, but… it was a required safety measure.
The moon rested high in the sky, washing the room in pale light by the time a sound finally greeted her. “Detective!” came a familiar voice, “Were you waiting for me? How sweet.”
“Icarus…” Satou greeted, “This is the end of the line for you.” She turned around and there he was, hanging through an open grate as though it were a comfortable perch. As the Detective watched, the Thief dropped down to the ground, landing lightly with the grate cover in his hands.
“Really, the end of the line?“ Icarus repeated, casually lowering the grate to the floor, “Planning to stop me right here?”
“Indeed. I can’t allow you to run around any longer, Phantom thief.” The Detective rested a hand on her belt, her holster just hidden by a trench coat.
The thief shrugged, not looking even a little shaken at the thought of being arrested. “I’ve had a good run, I suppose. Half the city’s soup kitchens had extra funding just from the spoils of my last heist.” He gestured with a black glove over to the glass case behind Satou, continuing with, “If I got my hands on even a single diamond off of that necklace, who knows what good I could do.”
The detective almost smiled, and crossed her arms. “You’re stealing private property, Icarus,” she replied.
“Private property… what are the owners doing, besides sitting on it?” he countered, still leisurely strolling over, “They sit in their gold towers while normal people suffer.”
“It isn’t your decision what someone does with their wealth.” Satou disagreed. By this time, the phantom thief and detective were close enough to touch. For several long seconds, they stood practically staring the other down. “The police will be on their way here, any minute now.”
That got a reaction out of the Phantom Thief, just not one she was expecting. He brought both hands up with a grin that looked almost goofy, brushing a lock of hair aside from his mask. “Already, huh? Do I at least get a last request before I’m hauled off to prison?”
A last request? “You sound like you’re expecting to die,” the Detective snickered, “Very well… what might this last request be? I’ll see what I can do about it.”
At her last statement, Icarus took a few steps closer. “Detective Satou… this might be forward of me, but…” Satou stayed where she was, only tilting her head when a tentative hand reached toward her. “May I request a kiss, from the lovely lady that finally managed to catch me?”
The detective merely blinked at him for a moment, before chuckling and accepting the hand. “A kiss?” she repeated, taking a bold step closer, “Is that really what you want from me?”
Icarus was quick to take a step after her, though his smile looked almost bashful now that they were close enough to poke noses. “W, well… would you be opposed to more, detective?”
“Perhaps.” Satou let out a hum and tapped her chin, like she was seriously debating it. Being close enough to kiss the notorious phantom thief that played jump rope with the law, nobody on the police force would ever believe it… She trailed a teasing finger under his chin to guide him closer still, then leaned in.
