Tackling Two of the Leading Killers of Children World Pneumonia Day, November 12, and World Toilet Day November 19, present an opportunity to take stock of progress on ending preventable child death from pneumonia and diarrheal disease – two of the leading killers of children. Earlier this year, WHO and UNICEF, with support from USAID, launched the Global Action Plan for the prevention and control of Pneumonia and Diarrhea [ http://www.who.int/maternal_child_adolescent/documents/global_action_plan_pneumonia_diarrhoea/en/ ] (GAPPD). It highlights the best practices for integrated approaches to protect, prevent and treat both diseases. Although unthinkable for those living in wealthy parts of the world, this is a harsh reality for many – in fact, one in three people on this globe do not have access to a toilet!
