Final thoughts on OG Final Fantasy 3
I have mixed feelings on this game. There's a lot I like about it, especially the graphics and the music. The music is consistently really good, and the monster sprites are really nicely-shaded.
The story balances drama and humor pretty well, and introduces one of my favorite recurring Final Fantasy elements: That Campy Skeleton Guy. I'm a simple monster, you dress up a skeleton all fancy and I think that's pretty neat. Oh, and a floating tree ship makes me go feral on sight. We need more of those.
The jobs system is... well, I genuinely don't like it as much as FF2's "progress based on what you do" system. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid idea, and I think it has certain advantages over FF2's system. In FF2, it's really not that practical to change a character's strategy in the late game, but the job system makes that doable. However, I just didn't find it as satisfying to play, because in FF2 I had the time of my life molding each character into the exact build I wanted.
It also didn't help that some jobs weren't really all that impressive. The Thief's Steal rate is frustratingly low, and the only thing you get is potions and hi-potions. Which, I wouldn't have minded that too much if the Thief's steal rate had been higher, because it would've been a reasonable healing strategy. But it's not, so it isn't.
The introduction of the Fat Chocobo was very nice after struggling with a limited inventory in Final Fantasy 2 - and a necessity for managing all the equipment you'll have pile up if you switch jobs a lot. Would've been nice if there was a system for sorting your items, but oh well. Can't invent everything at once.
IMO, the worst thing about the game are the parts where you suddenly have to do a lot of grinding. There's just no good reason for it, and it's really tedious. Especially when you're trying to level up four dragoons and your battle options are all Fight or Jump. I don't think there's many people who want to spend hours selecting Jump over and over and over.
I also wish the game hadn't gone back to a Vancian system (or semi-Vancian system, I guess?), because I really prefer having a flat pool of MP. I wouldn't call the system bad, but I find it inconvenient in ways that aren't really fun. And IMO, it doesn't really make any metaphysical sense that each level of magic would have its own MP pool.
Also, the way the game tried to incorporate the Toad spell into the gameplay is... in theory, I think this was a great idea! In practice, I think it left something to be desired. If there'd been some sorta minigame involved when you go down pipes and holes, it would've justified it. As it is, it's a mildly interesting concept without much to give it genuine interest.
This is also the franchise's first attempt at making a villain with a backstory, and I think they kinda whiffed. "Pissed off because your teacher gave you the 'gift' of mortality, which you did not want" is honestly... I mean... that's kinda reasonable, lol. Ending the world over it certainly isn't reasonable, but kinda hard not to feel sorry for Xande when his peers insist mortality is the greatest gift of all.
Anyway, one extremely good thing about the game is all the lovable NPCs. The NPCs are great. :3
Momentul terifiant în care un tată israelian se aruncă pe o grenadă pentru a-și proteja fiii
Imagini înfiorătoare Vă avertizăm că urmează detalii care vă pot afecta emoțional. Doi frați au privit îngroziți cum gruparea teroristă le-a luat cu asalt casa și l-a măcelărit pe tatăl lor – înainte ca unul dintre teroriști să bea nonșalant o Coca-Cola. in my mind Here Lies the Abyss should have similar vibes to Darkness Incarnate in fable iii.
