After spending last year filming a documentary about lost fishing nets and the devastation it creates to the local environment, finding this trap sitting right under the boat was quite alarming to me. We decided to have a closer look to make sure it wasn’t still ghost fishing. Daena took her fins and a line, took a deep breath and descended to 70 feet. She tied the line to the trap and brought it up with our sailboat winch. Once we had it up to the surface we asked the local coast guard what we should do since it’s likely been abandoned for many years and still fishing. Sadly the Guadeloupe Coast Guard simply asked us to cut a whole through the netting and release it back in. There are currently no programs set in place for retrieval and disposal of lost fishing gear in the Caribbean.
