Took me a minute to gather my thoughts on this one, long post ahead... //// Since moving to Los Angeles from Portland 2 years ago and not knowing a thing about working in the film industry, I wasn't sure how I was going to transition into Hollywood as a huge feminist, punk, planet earth activist. But my Spirit guides were quick to inform me differently, presenting the magic of possibility to me soon after. I'm lucky to say most projects that have landed in my lap have been unconventional; all female crews, women of color directors with important personal experiences to share, many stories shining a light on cultural, racial and sexual diversity in the scripts and in their casting alike. Not to mention the awesome crews i get to work with. The project I just wrapped was in line with all of that, too. Writer/Director Manish Dayal called me on a personal recommendation and coerced me to take on his short film while I still had my 9-5 day job, moonlighting it and making my days pretty long as art department head /production designer. We talked and solidified plans for my production design on his film the day before our new predator in chief signed the executive order putting the Muslim ban officially in effect. Needless to say, hearts were heavy and shocked as we moved ahead on making our film. The story we were about to film tells of memories, conflict and emotions tied up with post-9/11/2001 hate crime energy. It's about the fallout and trauma we experienced after that event and still are processing as a community today. Making our film over that week was healing and powerful to be a part of. It's crucial that I be part of productions and projects now that carry the energy of #resistance whenever possible..."Any crime against a POC is a crime against us all" Huge thanks to @manishdayal and our whole amazing crew for working so hard to make another thing I can be proud of and use as fuel to keep on going in this unpredictable and stressful, but breathtakingly beautiful industry. As everyone who I've ever admired always says "I'm broke, but I'm making cool shit." photo RP from @manishdayal 💜 #resist #notmypresident #womeninfilm #filmishealing #productiondesign
