What is a film society? If you look up the term on Wikipedia, you’ll find the definition: “A film society is a membership-based club where people can watch screenings of films which would otherwise not be shown in mainstream cinemas.” Examples given include Amos Vogel’s Cinema 16 (founded in 1947) and The Film Society of Lincoln Center (launched fifty years ago in the wake of Vogel coming to Lincoln Center to launch the New York Film Festival a few years earlier). The new issue of Film Comment, out today, includes an oral history from Amos Vogel. In the ‘60s, he advocated to Lincoln Center leadership that the new arts campus had a responsibility to include film alongside all the other art forms. Vogel’s advocacy instigated the creation of the New York Film Festival (which he lead alongside Richard Roud) and their immediate success paved the way for a film department on campus. Lincoln Center was initially resistant. “What’s next, baseball?” chairman John D. Rockefeller III famously asked. But Vogel and others persisted and The Film Society of Lincoln Center was born in the spring of 1969. Today we celebrate the 50th birthday of this illustrious organization by unveiling its new name. More than a membership club today, Film at Lincoln Center is a year round home for film aimed at supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema and enriching film culture. The mission remains the same even though the name has changed. Happy birthday, @FilmLinc! #FilmLinc50 (at Film Society of Lincoln Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw15hWPAExc/?igshid=18vdb19y8lqs4
