FAR Eastern University and the University of the Philippines put away their respective foes for their second win in as many games in the Filoil Flying V Premier Cup.

FEU survived a scorching rally by the Arellano Chiefs to win, 87-81, while UP held off College of Saint Benilde, 77-70.

UE returns to glory with Filoil Title

A 360º turn achieved in the last five years.  In 2008, the University of the East Red Warriors won their first ever Filoil Flying V Premier Cup against NCAA powerhouse San Beda College Red Lions. That lineup had the likes of now-PBA star Paul Lee, guards Marcy Arellano and James Martinez, and forwards Elmer Espiritu and Hans Thiele.  It was a high that the Red Warriors and the UE community hoped would continue until the UAAP and produce a long-elusive title in their mother league. That dream run never came. What ensued instead were years of heartaches and disappointments as UE lost the title to Ateneo in 2009, and failed to make the Final Four from 2010. For years, it felt like one of the winningest squads in the UAAP had lost its fight in it. Not even the likes of coaches Lawrence Chiongson and Jerry Codiñera could do anything about the team’s woes.  Fast forward to the summer of 2013 and people see the same lineup for the Recto-based team with a few additions. Long-time mentor Boycie Zamar is back calling the shots. Only this time, the Red Warriors are back fighting for another Filoil title.

Yesterday, a sea of red dominated the San Juan Arena to support the Red Warriors against defending champions National University Bulldogs. UE students and alumni came in droves, hungry for another shot at glory after years of dwelling in the proverbial collegiate basketball cellar.  The Red Lions, runners-up to the Warriors in 2008, had just won third place against the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 74-70.  Guard Baser Amer and former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle Art dela Cruz delivered the big baskets down the stretch to save the Red Lions from an end-game collapse. They were supported by Ola Adeogun, Rome dela Rosa and Kyle Pascual. All five of them finished with double figures.  “We knew we were facing a touch matchup,” Coach Boyet Fernandez said. “We just had to be ready and the boys had to step up.” “I am happy for the boys, they deserved the third place,” Fernandez added.  The supporters of UE hoped that the celebration of their red-blooded counterparts from Mendiola would rub on to them and their team. 

With 1.37 minutes gone by in the First Quarter, prolific guard Roi Sumang drew first blood with his three-point connection. A see-saw battle between the two Finals protagonists followed. For every shot Sumang converted, fellow Mythical Five member Bobby Ray Parks would answer for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs had a blistering start in the Third Quarter with Parks, Sean Mbe, Gelo Alolino and Dennis Villamor providing the goods for the Bustillos Five. A floater by Alolino with 4.16 minutes remaining in the period capped a 20-5 run by the Bulldogs for a 50-41 advantage. Despite a mini rally put up by the Red Warriors, the Bulldogs wounded up still with the lead at the end of the Third, 55-47.  The Red Warriors were a different beast in the final canto. Ralf Olivarez and Lord Casajeros—not the usual suspects for UE—flexed their muscles in offense as an and-1 play from Casajeros at the 7.03 mark tied the game at 57-all. 

Just over a minute later, Casajeros would again convert on an and-1 play. With 5.44 minutes left in the game, the reigning UAAP two-time MVP was called for his fifth foul after he reached in to a dribbling Olivarez. Olivarez sank only one of his charities, but Parks’ exit was an even bigger blow for the Bulldogs, who had been suffering from a scoring slump in the Fourth Quarter.  With 4.23 left to play, Mbe fouled out of the game after an infraction against UE’s import Charles Mammie. Mammie, who has struggled with his free throws the entire tournament, converted two of his attempts.  The Bulldogs just could not find an answer to the Red Warriors—whether offensively or defensively. Sumang and Olivarez took turns in punishing their opponents with a bevy of fancy shots. For almost eight minutes in the payoff period, the Bulldogs had made a successful field goal. Forward Jeoff Javillonar ended the bleeding for the Bulldogs with a putback at the 2.16 mark. But that effort proved to be too little, too late. With 12 seconds still left in the game, NU’s Coach Eric Altamirano had approached Zamar to congratulate him for his team’s impending win.  The Red Warriors carved out an 81-68 victory against the Bulldogs to cap their second Filoil Flying V Premier Cup title—the record they hold together with the De La Salle Green Archers. They are also the first team to beat the Bulldogs in the league for the last two years.  “I am very gracious,” Zamar said. “We joined this league knowing that we have everything to gain.”  After 11 games, his team gained composure and finally, another title.  “Humarap kami sa NU na hindi pa natatalo in the last 21 games,” Zamar added. “It just shows the character of the players.” Olivarez paced his team with 19 points, while Sumang had 18, Casajeros had 16, and Mammie had 10.

Zamar said numerous times that he was “no magician.” But for his players and the team’s supporters, that win, after years of languishing in defeats, was truly magical.
