Syn-fin might be confusing first and foremost b/c it’s “fin-syn”. Financial Syndication. This was a ruling put in place by the FCC that required the 3 major networks (ABC, CBS & NBC) to purchase programming from independent producers. Remember at this time they had a monopoly over programming; they just aired massive amounts of re-runs and syndicated each others’ programs, effectively keeping all profits between the 3 companies. The FCC broke that up with fin-syn and lowered the barriers to entry for independent media producers who wanted to get their shows on the air.
