c!dream: the lay down sacrifice

the more i think about the fact the final confrontation was staged, that all of what lead up to it was planned and staged, the more i think about how sad it is. the more i think about chess.

sad and horrific because c!dream truly is the sort who believes in the ends justifying the means, who will do anything to achieve his goal, and god, look at what he's done.

we've always known what he's done to others but the sheer scope of what he's done to himself is what's hitting me. losing everyone he cares about, pretending the last person on his side isn't, designing a prison for himself in the most cruel way possible, letting himself be cornered and killed.

in chess, that's called 'the lay down sacrifice'.

a move in which you offer up something that can't be ignored, that can't be turned down. a sacrifice, yes, but one which will guarantee your win. a gift because it's something your opponent wants.

the discs. the revive book. himself.

c!dream called c!tubbo a pawn. they said it was checkmate. but it wasn't. the real move that dream made in that confrontation was missed. the real piece that he sacrificed was himself.

Anyway the whole point of the final disc confrontation was that attachments are healthy and good, while giving up on them is not! c!Tommy and c!Tubbo’s attachments to the rest of the server saved their lives, while c!Dreams lack of was what caused him to lose, and his warped view on them which lead to the attachment vault were what finally turned a lot of people against him. The attachment vaults also show that c!Dream’s efforts to give up attachments are, ultimately, pointless, as he simply shifted from healthy attachments to becoming unhealthily obsessed with control over the server, especially c!Tommy, to the point he built a shrine to the discs, what he thought could give him complete control over c!Tommy because of that warped and unhealthy view of attachments.

As such, any sort of alternate ending or proceeding of events where c!Tommy willingly destroyed or otherwise renounced his discs would be in complete jarring contrast. c!Tommy’s attachments to the discs have been unhealthy before, but only when cut off from any other things through severe conditioning. The discs are far more than their physical forms, and are a representation of c!Tommy’s sense of freedom and determination, along with the relative innocence and peace before the wars of the server. c!Tommy having to destroy a representation of those things would be horrifically tragic, and it being framed as a victory would be completely counter to the themes and symbolism of the event itself.

Ok Final Waltz was incredible, but can we talk for a moment about the continued use of Dream’s mask as symbolism.

I remember after Hog Hunt came out, a few people made some very banger theories about how Dream’s mask slowly covering more of his face in every animatic represents how he is slowly hiding more and more of his intentions, and becoming more inhuman.

In Dream Smp War, his face is mostly uncovered and the mask sits on one side of his face for most of the animatic.

But in The Fall, the mask is covering much more of his face. However, it still does not cover all of it.

In Dawn of the 16th, the mask still shows some of his face but it fully covers it more consistently than in the other animatics.

And finally, in Hog Hunt, the mask is fully down. In addition to this, his face is even further covered due to the shadows from his hood.

Ultimately this makes him seem more secretive and inhuman as time goes on.

This brings us to Final Waltz. In this animatic, Dream’s face is covered at the beginning but as he starts to reveal his plan and shows Tommy and Tubbo his hall of attachments, one of his eyes is finally visible again.

It is interesting to note that his eye is coloured bright green, which is different from his appearance in the earlier animatics. Even though Dream’s face is showing again, he is obviously not the same person as he was in the first animatic.

When Tommy breaks his mask, Dream has nowhere to hide. Everyone knows what he planned to do and, for once, he is vulnerable. He finally seems human again, but it’s because of his vulnerable position in the scene.

This is just a Sadist appreciation post honestly. The attention to detail that she always puts into the animatics is stunning and she truly is the backbone of this fandom.

okay so here’s the thing, dream and punz planning the final disc confrontation doesn’t take away from clingy duos win AT ALL and I think the biggest reason why this is up for argument is because people don’t fully get what clingy duo’s win actually was

I have a theory (and feel free to tell me I’m wrong because this is genuinely a guess on my part) that people think the clingy duo’s win was beating dream physically and throwing him in jail, but tubbo and tommy didn’t go there to do that and didn’t expect to win at all. In the room tubbo was ready to die. Fully. I highly highly doubt tommy would have lived much longer knowing that tubbo was gone. Tommy and tubbo said goodbye to each other. They only got this artificial win on dream after a different event, the real win for clingy duo

The duo’s real win was finally having support that they had lost a long, long time ago. Both were used to fighting for causes, not people and when wilbur died both were lost on what they were fighting for. The army showing up proved to both of them that they didn’t need a cause to fight for. That fighting for each other was enough. The reason I think that this is the win is because narratively they has been building up to this for months. Both characters had been heavily isolated leading up to this event. Tommy’s isolation was far more forward, he’d just gotten out of exile which not only was social isolation, but physical isolation as well. Tubbo’s isolation was a lot more subtle. He was isolated socially and politically which is half the reason I think that it was over looked so heavily. Social isolation wise, tubbo and tommy no longer had each other, but politically tubbo was never respected. His cabinet didn’t agree with anything that they didn’t decide for him, instead of his cabinet backing him up and giving him the political support he needed, he was alone in most decisions

During the final confrontation, though the duo had each other once again, it was still them vs the world. That’s why punz showing up with an army so such a significant moment: it was the first time since l’manburg that they had an army of people by their side and ready to support them.

This is also why I think it being staged doesn’t take away from their win. Punz may have rounded everyone up and Dream may have told him to do so, but none of them were forced to show up. Punz didn’t need to drag everyone there because everyone cared about tommy and tubbo already. The scene may have been staged, but everyone’s care for the duo was and is real. Tommy and tubbo became surrounded by family and friends who genuinely cared about that both. Those people dropped the ball when they needed the support earlier, but still proved that they would be there in the duo’s time of need

tldr: clingy duo’s win was finally breaking isolation, not taking two of dream’s canon lives and throwing him in prison. even if some of it was under false pretenses, everyone who showed up still cared deeply about tommy and tubbo

Screw everything, final disc war stream appreciation

It topped all of the watchers expectations. Seriously. From the start to the end. There was something nobody could say or argue against

The writing was phenomenal. Not even completely writing. FUCKIN IMPORVISING. The plots also were amazing. PUNZ? THE CREW SHOWING UP? I fuckin screamed.

Also the acting was on top. Everyone had a part with the main three actors leading this piece to beauty.

Just, Final disc war stream was the best stream ever
