Title: The Chosen One’s True Purpose: Anakin Skywalker, Balance, and the Illusion of Power (final edition)
Vol 2
Essay / Fan Theory by Deanna Winchester
Palpatine once said, “He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power. Which eventually, of course, he did.” The irony of that quote cannot be overstated. Palpatine, master manipulator and self-proclaimed eternal Emperor, was not omniscient. He believed he had outwitted fate, twisted prophecy, and bent the Chosen One to his will. But in truth, his arrogance blinded him to the inevitability of his own downfall.
This quote, often tied to the Death Star—a symbol of fear, dominance, and ultimate control—serves as foreshadowing. It is not merely a comment on Darth Plagueis or even Anakin’s fall. It’s a prophecy of Palpatine’s own undoing. His obsession with power, control, and cheating death echoes the fate of his master. Despite his efforts, he too is destroyed by the very forces he sought to dominate. He never truly saw it coming.
Palpatine was never a true seer. He could sense fear, manipulate darkness, and orchestrate war, but he lacked understanding of one key truth: Anakin Skywalker was never truly his. He mistook Anakin’s desperation for devotion, his conflict for corruption, and his power for permanent allegiance. What he never understood—what neither the Sith nor the Jedi fully grasped—was that Anakin’s purpose was never to serve either side.
Anakin Skywalker was meant to bring balance.
Not the Jedi’s version of balance—where darkness is purged and denied.
Not the Sith’s vision—where power rules and light is crushed.
True balance. The reconciliation of the two sides within a single being.
The Jedi feared attachment. The Sith fed on obsession. Anakin was torn between the two extremes, used and manipulated by both. But beneath the chaos was a deep and enduring truth: Anakin’s soul never fully belonged to the dark. He was always reaching for something more—for love, for connection, for the chance to save those he cared about. In the end, it wasn’t power that redeemed him. It was family.
When he saved Luke, he didn’t act as a Sith or a Jedi.
He acted as a father.
He acted as a man who chose compassion over domination.
That is when the prophecy was fulfilled.
Palpatine’s fatal mistake was assuming that power could last forever. That he could control fate. That fear and dominance were stronger than love and redemption. But Anakin’s journey was never linear. His fall to the dark side was not the end, but part of a greater transformation. He walked through the shadow to return to the light—not as a Jedi reborn, but as a soul restored.
Both the Jedi and the Sith misunderstood the prophecy.
They interpreted the Chosen One through the lens of war, power, and absolutes.
But the Force seeks balance—and balance requires both shadow and light to coexist.
Anakin Skywalker was never meant to destroy only the Sith or champion the Jedi.
He was meant to transcend them.
He was the bridge. The fulcrum. The reckoning.
And in the end, he fulfilled his destiny not by power, but by choosing peace—by letting go.
