Your final paper should consist of 12-16 pages made up of a well-written interpretive analysis of one person’s star image, that is a study of their polysemic meaning that goes far beyond biography. While some biographical details are important, particularly a “life and times” angle that should drive the section of the essay on historic context, you want to expand the discussion beyond a book report or list-like tone (AVOID this happened, then this, then this, etc.) and consider the many facets to their star persona.
Sources you consult should be a combination of the scholarly and popular. Keep in the mind that the readings we’ve completed for class are meant to provide you with useful models of “star studies” scholarship. Look to the Notes/Bibliography sections of these essays for the kinds of sources our various authors have consulted.
Keep in the mind that the popular sources you consult will be dictated by the type of star you select. If you decide to pick a more contemporary star, I expect you to have a broader array of online sources that include web essays, blog entries, and social media posts. If you select a star from the twentieth century, your popular sources will consist of traditional media like magazines, tabloids, and newspapers. Regardless of the historic context that surrounds your chosen star, films should be an integral part of your analysis.
Scholarly perspectives must also be incorporated into your paper. In your essays you must include at least one quote from Richard Dyer’s Stars, which acts as the foundational text for this course.
While there is no set amount for the number of sources you need to consult, a good general guideline would be 10-12 total, with a minimum of 4-5 scholarly sources.
