A HISTORY MAJOR’S GUIDE TO BULLSHITTING YOUR WAY TO WORD/PAGE COUNT
QUOTE: Every word that you take from your sources is a word that you don’t have to write. Plus, you’ll often find that quotes are a great way to back up your point and make it seem like you’ve done your research.
DO NOT USE CONTRACTIONS: You’re not supposed to use them in academic papers to begin with, but either way every single word counts so why use one word where you could use two?
DEVIATE FROM YOUR OUTLINE (if necessary): if something occurs to you while writing, ADD IT IN. It might end up needing it’s own paragraph but hey. You need those. You’re reading a guide about bullshitting your way to word count.
DO SOME MORE RESEARCH: yeah it’s the last thing you want to hear, but more research means more material to quote and possibly more talking points. Just use google scholar to find something relevant.
INCLUDE DEFINITIONS IN YOUR PAPER: Doing a paper on some weird obscure topic like parity rights or some shit? Include the definition of important terms somewhere! ( obviously don’t do this if your term is known by everyone and their mother, but you’re smart enough to know that.)
GO ALEXANDER HAMILTON ON THIS SHIT: If you’re like me, and have a tendency to get straight to the point, try wording things in a more of a long-winded manner. (Use this tip in moderation)
POSE SOME RHETORICAL QUESTIONS AT THE READER: Not only will this make your paper more entertaining to read, but you’ll also get to air your opinions about your topic, and state to the reader why your topic matters, and deserves discussion. This also can work great as an introductory sentence to any paragraph.
GOOD LUCK Y’ALL
