For my product shot I decided I wanted to shoot starburst, as I thought that this would not only create a good shot for Illustrative because of the colour but it would also create a nice shot for creative as well as there is a lot more that you can do with starburst than I thought. Meaning that I was able to use my imagination a lot more.
My illustrative shot was taken with an ISO of 100, a zoom of 55mm an aperture set to f/16, a shutter speed of 1/125. The white balance was set to auto try and create a strong white background. The equipment that I used to take this shot was a canon 550D, one studio light with a soft box, a hot shoe and wire to connect the light and the camera so that when the shutter button was hit it meant that it would trigger the flash of the light to go off. I also used a stand with white card as the background. I used flags, reflectors and diffusers to help control where the light was going, a light meter was also used so that it would read the power of the light and give the correct aperture when your camera is set to 1/125 of a second.
I really liked shooting this item as it challenged me and helped me to further my skills in photography by trying to make sure that there wasn't any harsh shadows under the product or and harsh highlights on the product. Whilst making sure that there wasn't any harsh shadows or highlights, I had to make sure that there was enough light on the product so that it would create a nice white background.
The most challenging part of trying to shoot this product was trying to make sure that there wasn't any harsh shadows or highlights as I would near enough always have a shadow under the starburst packet but I managed to use a reflector to get rid of the shadow, however because the reflector reflects the light it meant that it was bouncing off of the wrapper of the product causing there to be a harsh shadow along the fold of the wrapper. This meant that I then had to add in a diffuser to try and remove some of the light from the packet while still trying to use the reflector to get rid of the shadow underneath the product, with a few trail and errors I finally managed to get the correct balance of light so that there wasn't and harshness of either.
I chose this image as my final image as the whole product is in focus and there isn't any harsh shadows or highlights. The background is also very white which manages to make the product stand out a lot more.
For my creative I wanted to do something that would look detailed and pretty, something that was different sonf not many people would have thought that you could have created with starburst. So I decided to make flowers out of the wrappers and the sweets themselves. I used the wrappers to create the petals of the flowers and the stem, then cut out a circle from the sweets to create the centre of the flower and with the leaf cutter I created leafs out of the green starburst. I also cut out little flowers to place around the main flowers then used starburst to create a border.
The shot was taken with an ISO of 100, a zoom of 47mm, an aperture set at f/22, a shutter speed of 1/125 of a second and an automatic white balance. The equipment that has been used to take this image is a 550D canon camera, one studio light with soft box, a hot shoe and wire to connect camera to light. I also used a stand to set it up on with white card as the background. A light meter was used to get the correct aperture.
I loved shooting the creative side to this product as it let me use my imagination and meant that I was able to do it anyway I wanted without it looking plain and simple. The only main problem that I had with trying to shoot this image was trying to get the detail that was imprinted on the leafs to show up as the green starbursts were more of a white than a green so it meant that the detail wouldn't show up the way that I was wanting it to. With trying to show the detail of the leafs but not making them over exposed meant that the background wouldn't have been as white as it could have been, if I was to try and over expose the leaves to get more of a white background it might have meant that the leaves would have blended in with the background.
