Journey to becoming debt free
The Financial Planning Association recently hosted certified financial coach Alexis Fetterman to give a presentation on reducing debt and budgeting. Although the turnout was small, the students who attended seemed very interesting and engaged. Alexis spoke about her own personal journey to becoming debt free. After helping her husband’s brother move into a new house, she realized she wanted to move out of her fixer-upper they had been working on for ten years. But first they had to pay off their student-loan debt. The Fetterman family then began their journey to become debt free. By October of 2019, they were able to pay off $48,000 of debt in 13 months. Since then, Alexis has become a certified financial coach under the Dave Ramsey’s Financial Coach Master Program. Before Fetterman finished her presentation, one student started asking questions that kicked off a lively and interesting question and answer session. A professor of finance also attended the presentation and added insightful comments and personal stories. Additionally, Alexis’ husband, Caleb, said that since becoming debt free, they experience life much differently. He said that as a father, he is glad to now be able to save for his own kids’ college without the burdens of their own debt. After the presentation, the Financial Planning Association has expressed interest in her returning to speak in the fall semester. — Gabriel Miller, senior communication studies major
