The two boys sat, trying hard to think of something to do.
“We could... light something on fire?” one of the boys asked.
“That’s ridiculous, Jack. Everything below waist height is dead this time of year. We’d accidentally burn down the mountain,” the other boy replied critically.
“Fine,” Jack said. “It was just an idea. We could... make food?”
“Dude. We just spent two hours cooking and eating chicken. We can’t go back into the kitchen.”
“Well I don’t see you contributing any ideas, Tommy,” Jack jabbed.
“I’ve told you, I don’t like it when people call me that. My name is Thomas, and that’s what I am to be called,” Thomas answered irritably, raising his voice. He stood up from the chair in his living room and started pacing. “We could draw something. We could watch a show. We could even make a mattress slide down the stairs!”
“Are you kidding me? That stuff is all too juvenile.” Jack’s voice was raised to match as he stood up too. “We aren’t two kids imagining up creatures and pretending to be them anymore! I want to do something REAL.”
“Well why don’t you go and—” Thomas paused, then lit up. “Wait, I have an idea.” Thomas quieted for a second.
“Well, what is it? Don’t just leave me hanging.”
“What if we go to the grocery sto—”
“Uuuuugh, I’m tired of going to the store for entertainment,” Jack interrupted. “Don’t get me wrong, I think its fun, but we do it too often. We just went yesterday.”
“I wasn’t finished,” Thomas stated. “Just hear me out. We each can only spend ten dollars on stuff, and afterwards we go explore the mountain again and spend the night up there. But this time, we’re only allowed to take our clothes and what we’ve bought.”
Jack’s face changed from that of exasperation to delight. “That’s a great idea! But isn’t ten dollars a little on the low side? How about twenty?”
“Deal. And what about clothing? Are we allowed to change into something more suitable for the expedition?”
“Nope. We go as we are, T-shirts and shorts.”
“Well alright. I have high hopes for this trip, Thomas. I’ll leave a note for my parents, grab my money, and be right back.”
“Alright bro, I’ll be here waiting,” Thomas said as he walked Jack to the door. “See you in a few.”
The two boys performed their secret handshake that they created when they were younger, which took about 30 seconds.
“See you dude,” Jack replied as he mounted his bike and rode off.
