Finding the Missing Link

Alanna moved silently through the crowds in Agrabah’s marketplace, her eyes darting about in search of one person in particular. When she found him, she smiled behind her veil. Her hair was covered by a dark, nearly navy, blue dupatta, further hiding her identity. Normally, she would have had a kaffiyeh hiding her hair and face, the same as the other members of the Forty---though forty they were currently not---but it wouldn’t help her today to look like a bandit. Not when she needed to be inconspicuous. So she kept her face hidden in the same style as the other women in the marketplace, with a veil that covered everything below her eyes. Her smile persisted as she watched the young man skillfully appropriate a piece of fruit from a cart and then lift some coins from an unsuspecting passerby’s purse.
As the young thief slipped into the shadows of a side street, Alanna followed silently, waiting until his guard was down to approach him.
“So,” she said, stepping toward him, her smirk evident in her tone, “are you as bold as they say?”
