home is where the heart is

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what home really means to me. Webster’s Dictionary defines at home as “In harmony with the surroundings.” The familiar quote “Home is where the heart is” has been bouncing around my brain, and a commonly quoted passage from the Bible has also been taking up residence in my cerebral cortex (I had to google “function of the cerebral cortex” to make sure I was right, so that I’d look smarter). 

In Matthew 6, Jesus is quoted saying, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Too often, I find myself putting my treasure in tangible, inanimate objects. Jesus may as well have said “Where your home is, there your heart will be also.” My point is, home isn’t a place. It isn’t a cottage or a landscape or a dorm room. Home is where the heart is, and your heart is where your treasure is. I want my primary focus in life to put my heart into people. Not my cell phone, not tumblr (sorry @staff), not social status, not religion, not rules. Just people. In John 13:34-35, Jesus says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” 

I’d like to inspire whoever may be reading this post to find your home where you find your people. If you are out to love, you’ll never be without a place to stay.
