Theo sighed as he nearly returned to his room, stretching his arms out in front of him a bit. It had been a long day, full of frustrating screw ups with his powers while he trained, a horribly boring math class, and one particular teenage mutant who loved to tease Theo about his height relentlessly, laughing at his own jokes as though they were anything original. He was exhausted, and all he could think about was bed, although he knew he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep for hours. It was then that he heard loud voices, and glanced in the direction of the hallway he had just run down. He spotted several students from his floor sprinting towards the stairs, towards the buildings entrance. He furrowed his eyebrows, but attributed it to some teenage behavior of rowdy mutants. He lowered his own eyes for a moment, blocking the sounds out as he lowered his own sense of hearing to a muffle. He had almost reached his door, when he heard a truly worrying sound.
Even through his muffled hearing, the loud sound of a bang was unmistakable. He instantly dropped the veil from his ears, and heard a whole new wave of commotion, this time from outside. He hurried over to a window that overlooked some of the yard, and spotted just the edges of... was that fire? Were there mutants fighting? His face was one of confusion as more students ran down the hall behind him. Although his instincts screamed at him to stay here, he couldn’t deny he at least wanted a better look. He plodded down the nearby stairs quickly, but whereas many students headed straight for what Theo could now see as chaos, the smaller boy stayed behind, instead taking shelter behind a group of nearby trees, where he could watch from a distance. He saw figures outlined by the darkening sky, mutants raging, flying and burrowing, burning and throwing each other like rag dolls with just their minds. What the hell was going on? This didn’t seem like some kind of simulation.
Just then, he spotted a familiar face nearby, just able to make out his face as evening began to turn into a dark night. “Finn!” He hissed, in a kind of hushed shout. They were far enough away that the mutants wouldn’t hear them, but he knew well enough that enhanced hearing was not uncommon. He took a couple steps away from the trees, enough to be noticed if he beckoned, but not to be spotted if he didn’t. He stared at the other boy in confusion, although a feeling of familiarity swept over him, and he felt oddly more at home now than he normally did. He had grown accustomed to imminent danger, and this school was normally far too quiet and safe for his hyper-vigilant nature.
“What the hell is going on?” He muttered bluntly. “Are they fighting for real? Are those other mutants from the school?”
