instead of silent salt who she looks to for guidance begrudgingly they were made by elder faerie as a result of longing for a greater connection (this distance was fuelled by silent salts own past of abuse and how they refused to acknowledge or address this, of course) so ash salt is raised completely alone away from like EVERYONE including the other faeries, made to believe that silent salt was this figure of greatness who was so understanding and considerate. it didnt help that while raising them, elder faerie grew more and more distant the more obvious it got that she was nothing like elder faerie OR silent salt themselves … always curling up in pain from the digitigrade legs as well as the headaches they got from the pseudo-ear which wasnt meant to be there in the first place, the structure of their head being altered almost unnaturally. elder faerie, while very well-intentioned, was also going through internalised unpleasant stuff which they projected onto ash salt. how dare she not overcome her pain? wont she be like silent salt? wont she be strong like the supposed relationship they were supposed to have together? <- ash salt’s own weaknesses make elder faerie think about the slight distance thats growing between them and silent salt, which elder faerie is NOT fond of being reminded of. and they take this out back on ash salt.
later for the “benefit of everybody” they were sent to join the kala namak knights instead of being a knight for the faerie kingdom. at first she was almost elated, to finally receive the proper affection and adoration of someone who raised her. and silent salt was… nice! seriously! they were nice and kind just like they were with every single one of their other new recruits. but that was it. BECAUSE ELDER FAERIE NEVER EVEN TOLD THEM THEY HAD A CHILD !!!!! yet, ash salt wished for more, yearned for more, something to bring a sense of purpose and understanding, to know why she had to suffer like this almost uniquely. silent salt was supposed to be the other piece of the puzzle! it was supposed to be complete and yet she kept feeling nothing! (but also, were her feelings and thoughts still relevant here?) <- taken from elder faerie, even if it was unintentional .
and then they perished like the other kala namak knights under silent salt’s leadership. made to believe they were so adoringly special, that they were supposed to be, and yet unremarkable in their final moments. one of the first few to perish. never for silent salt to remember as more than a loyal soldier, and it wasn’t even their fault so ash salt couldn’t be mad. they couldn’t feel anything. that wasn’t relevant!
…except in the ouropocalypse. ash salt’s rotted remains are scrounged back together to create what is surprisingly a well-made replica, and immediately she is desperate to find some sort of respite from the overwhelming loneliness, you know how it is . their first instinct is silent salt, of course! surely silent salt will be kind and benevolent and immediately understanding and in the right space to interact with them! but then silent salt rips off two limbs lashing out (and to harm themselves, hurting someone they cared for) and, upon seeing that they hurt someone, immediately fled out of shame and horror. so now ash salt is completely aimless, in her eyes BOTH of her only places of belonging have abandoned her and she doesnt know where to go.
…there’s always some comfort found in finality, after all.
