Three thousand years ago, Death gave the power over night and day to a single pair of night and light elves. With the Grigori scythe, the light elf wielder summons the day while the night elf wielder calls down night with the Demon scythe and for thousands of years, the light and night elves live alongside each other in peace in the land of Sathros. However, everything changes when Asura, the Demon scythe wielder, slays his light elf partner and stamps out the rest of the light elves. A never-ending darkness descends upon Sathros for nearly one hundred years until one day, he is inexplicably stripped of his powers and they are passed onto a young night elf named Soul. Hunted by Asura's agents, Soul flees and comes across an elf named Maka trapped in a cave and the first light elf to be seen in almost a hundred years. With the light elf knowing nothing of her past and the dark elf only wishing to escape the shadow, they band together. Little do they know that it is their coming together that will finally drive away the darkness.
