oh shoot uhhh honestly since I write for a lot of fandoms I have trouble picking an all-time favorite. I do tend to gravitate to characters with very distinctive voices/speaking patterns, I've found, which is both a fun challenge (would they say that?) and really a problem when I haven't gone back to the source material in a while

I'm also very fond of writing narrators that do not tell the full truth in their narration lol

After her imprisonment in Nilfgaard during the witch trials that were going around, she has no idea where they're currently at or if anyone took care of them while she was gone.. but they were her babies 💔🫶

do you have a list of go to books you’d recommend to fellow joanna fans

oh what a lovely question! well, I'd first recommend checking out books and authors Joanna has mentioned over the years:

her favorite "The Sound and the Fury" by William Faulkner (if you read it and enjoy it, I personally really liked "The Wild Palms [If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem]" too, can definitely sense Joanna vibes);

maybe I'm boring but you can't go wrong with Vladimir Nabokov (anything tbh, his writing is gorgeous) - Pale Fire, Ada or Ardor: A Family Chronicle (fun fact: Joanna read before/while writing Divers and if you read it you'll get it; it gave me some Gabriel García Márquez vibes if you like him, you might enjoy Ada), Lolita (Joanna wrote a paper in college analyzing color mauve in it so definitely try it out), Letters to Vera (because I love Love);

my dear James Joyce - I'd say read all of it haha but to see Divers in a different light, try Finnegans Wake;

Joanna also loves Ernest Hemingway for his style of writing, and I get why, he writes so clearly. She's mentioned loving Toni Morrison. Go for their classics.

I'd also add Jorge Luis Borges "A New Refutation of Time", "The Book of Sand" - I found his way of writing about time really fascinating.

These are some I can think of at this moment. Maybe more will come to my mind later. But honestly, try any of them. Joanna has impeccable taste if I do say so myself.

Okay so this quote made me cry: “When was it I realized that, on this truly dark and solitary path we all walk, the only way we can light is our own? Although I was raised with love, I was always lonely. Someday, without fail, everyone will disappear, scattered into the blackness of time.” Now I have to find this book and read it and cry more

Oh darling 🥹 Even the quote is so sad and lonely. It’s beautiful and has light but the melancholy seeps through and sinks the body.
